Shakepen says:
Leonard: over the years, the number of virgins has kept increasing. What is the real number. Given the way Egypt is treating its female population, it is good that there are muslim virgins in the afterlife since the Muslim population is eliminating them on earth!

Shakepen says:
J.Schwarz: According to the Monk Debate on t.v. yesterday, Israel has between 200 and 500 nuclear weapons, a number of them on submarines.

arpard...What on earth has Israel been using to knock out the missles from Gaza, rubber bands?

Shakepen says:
Spiritual Arch...The U.S. has a treaty with Israel, plus obligations regarding Israel's existence under the UN Charter. Yes, the US will honor its commitment.

Shakepen says:
I watched a debate on this issue yesterday...A Monk debate. One of the defenders of containment rather than armed force, pointed out that the people who rule Iran had not become suicide bombers themselves nor have they let their children become suicide bombers. This point presumably proved that the Iranisn leaders are not ready for a rapture like event.

K.A.Goldberg says:
Jews are about 2-3% of the U.S. Population, and far less than 1/5th of 1% of the world's population, yet they remain the easy scapegoats of paranoids, bigots, conspiracy types, etc. If Jews didn't exist, they would probably be invented by the haters, bigots and paranoids - or these types would pick another group to blame.

As for the leadership of Iran, they seem to have a matyrdom complex, and may not fear getting nuked as it may mean 72 virgins and heavenly rewards. They've been threatening Israel (which is about 25% Arab) with destruction since taking over in 1979. Israel may not wait much longer.

if we were to use a halakhic definition,

LMW: why would we?

Jews actually are less than 2% of the US population, and if we were to use a halakhic definition, the percentage no doubt would be far smaller than that. Blaming everything people don't like on the Israel Lobby and Jews in government is merely an updated version of the Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion.

J. Schwarz says:
Iran on the other hand is crazy enough to use a nuke because they want to meet and greet their messiah and the 72 virgins.

LMW: So why isn't Iran still fighting Iraq? Are they getting some at home?

DarthRad says: ... because they sit on the Straits of Hormuz, the gateway to the world's oil supply, and because of the Israel Lobby...

LMW: isn't the USA interest in oil enough? it has to be that the Jews want it too?

Jews are 3% of the US population. If the Israeli Lobby is a problem, then it is time for those opposed to put their money where their mouth is.

L. King says:
Different size rocket. Higher trajectory, larger mass and speed. Iron Dome has an impressive 85% success rate, but the system also predicts which rockets are not likely to hit a populated or strategic target and ignores them. A nuclear warhead does not have to go off that close to it's target.

The Israelis are developing an intermediate and long range systems, but one EMP burst and the sophisticated software underlying the system becomes useless. Star Wars it's not.

There were clues to 911, but their significance was not appreciated.

If it's impossible to tell when someone is about to fire a missile then how can we tell that North Korea is about to do so?

You do realize that the technology to build a suitcase bomb is considerably more difficult to develop than that to build a regular atomic bomb.

The Israeli antimissile defenses were highly effective in shooting down rockets fired by Hamas. I don't see why they wouldn't work against Iranian missiles.

Just curious: are we now counting the next 136 days?

In reply to an earlier post on Jan 2, 2013 1:24:20 PM PST
Do you know for a fact that there's no way we could tell if Iran was about to fire a nuclear armed missile at Israel?

Do you know for a fact that there are no anti-missile defenses currently in place that could shoot down such a missile?

Would the US let Israel be wiped out? Would the Arab countries let Iran be wiped out?
I think it's a no win situation.

The people who say they know don't know. The people who know aren't talking.

K.A.Goldberg says:
But maybe the question will be will Israel hit Iran within the next year or so?

Whether or you like, dislike or are ambivalent towards Israel, or Iran, or both, one nation (Iran) has made continued threats against the other (Israel) ever since the revolution of 1979, threatening repeatedly that Israel will be wiped off the map.

Will Israel sit back and allow this to happen or take pre-emptive action?

OK. Time's up.

The answer is NO

Thanks to everyone in the Middle East and everywhere else for not starting WWIII.
This includes the Mayans.
And thanks to all of you who shared your thoughts here.
