I read recently, (in the wiki, so it must be true), that an extinct baltic language , Sudovian, exists with a glossary of a couple of hundred words. But we nearly knew a whole lot more. A ukrainian collector name of Zinov ,bought an old manuscript from which he made some notes. It had parallel texts in polish and sudovian. From the sparse notes he made scholars do not doubt that the doc he had was the largest known corpus of this baltic language.
OK, what became of the document which might have retrieved a language thought lost, back into life?
His mother burnt it in a rage!!
Which is why nerds should always consider leaving home.

A lot of lost languages go that way. It's sad.

I always wondered about the loss of the Germanic laguage Gothic...it was last used in the 18th century in Crimea (goths who stayed behind??)...I would think that would be of interest to many teenage American youth...but I hear of no pilgrimages to southern Ukraine...

Here you go:

Atta unsar, țu in himinam,

wairțai wilja țeins,
swe in himina jah ana airțai.

Hlaif unsarana țana sinteinan gif uns himma daga,

("But loose us of them evil"!)

I prefer Plattdeutsch.

Have you seen the Non Sequitur Discussion in the Christianity forum?
That's weird and useless raised to an art form!

Ahh Bishop Ulfias I knew him well, but he was only a half-goth, though the gothic script is allegedly his invention...and it is appropriate Isabella, this thread started with a question "Are the Prussians gone for good?" and the main answer seemed to revolve around "if their language is gone, then they (whatever group, not just Prussians) are gone". We disputed whether plattduestch was the "prussian" language. And then as an example of the opposite side of the spectrum of the German Languages, the extinct East Group, I brought up Gothic language, the Goths are gone, because their language is gone...thus giving me a new motto for all humanity..."Ich spreche, Ich bin"... (I speak, therefore I am)

when does a dialect..become a seperate language?

Posted on Feb 10, 2010 12:50:22 PM PST
briefcandle says:
And how long is that piece of string?
There are two boundaries to consider:
1 when the dialect is so weak that it can be argued that the spoken differences are so small that the dialect is the same as the parent language.
2 where the dialect is so strong, that it must be regarded as a separate new language.
3 where the mixing of the original with other languages might best be described not as dialect but as a pidgin or creole.
There, like I said, two boundaries!

Suetonius says:
Does that mean that English is a pidgin or creole?

German-Latin mix?

In reply to an earlier post on Feb 10, 2010 8:20:42 PM PST
Suetonius says:
Yes. Actually two Germanic and two Romance, with some others thrown in.

In reply to an earlier post on Nov 28, 2010 9:59:20 AM PST
What are the "others thrown in", Gaelic/Keltik?

I would think norn/norse, celtic in english is negligible during the early middle ages. A lot of gaulish words come indirectly thru norman/french.
