Jews don't stone women or kill their sisters for looking or speaking to men. And that's just the beginning.

SUSANNA: Jews don't stone women or kill their sisters for looking or speaking to men.

LINDA: The way some of the haredim are behaving in Israel these days, I get the feeling they would like to start doing just that. The crazier ones aren't that far away from it now.

Several hundred haredi protesters threw stones, bottles and pieces of metal at police in the Jerusalem neighborhood of Mea Shearim on Wednesday.

Six police officers were injured by stones thrown at them by protesters. Five of the injured were treated at the scene and one officer, suffering from a head injury, was evacuated to the hospital. Five people were arrested for disturbing public order.

Ultra-Orthodox Jews threw rocks on Wednesday in Beit Shemesh at a woman who was about to take her baby out of her car.

Two women, also ultra-Orthodox, helped the woman and her 7-month-old infant to safety in a nearby store. No one was injured during the incident, but the car's windows were damaged.

Vered Daniel, 34, lives in a nearby community. She had come to buy baby products at a store where she is a regular customer, near the ultra-Orthodox part of town.

Terror In Beit Shemesh: Wheelchair Bound Orthodox Kids Harassed By Haredim
Girl in wheelchair says she was chased down the street and screamed at, by haredi kids who think her wheelchair violates Shabbat. An Orthodox boy in wheelchair has the same experience and adds that one of the haredi children tried to hurt him Another Modern Orthodox girl reports she was spit on and harassed because she wasn't dressed "modestly" according to the haredim. And her family was threatened, receiving a letter from haredi neighbors stating that "as a result of the complaints regarding your daughters' dressing habits, the rabbis of the neighborhod have decided that your family should leave this neighborhood within 2 months time."

These incidents provoked a flood of negative responses from the rest of Israeli society. Many Israelis saw this as another indication of the Haredi Jews' commitment to forcing all Israelis to conform to Haredi religious scruples. The outrage expressed by the Israeli public was, at least in part, fueled by considerable bitterness toward the Haredim for the fact that they benefit greatly from the state but contribute little toward Israeli society. So the negative response was quite strong and widespread.
The Haredim responded to this backlash by staging a demonstration in which they dressed in clothes like those issued in Auschwitz and wore yellow stars with the word "Jude." They claimed that the press and Israeli society were treating them like the Nazis had done.
Some secular Israeli women struck back by organizing a flash mob in a Haredi area. About 250 women did a dance performance in the streets. This was particularly provocative since Haredi men are prohibited from seeing women dance and hearing women sing.
I have not seen any more recent developments, but editorial content suggests that tensions continue to be very high. This is the context in which the editorial writer is making his observations.

An Egyptian plumber in Alexandria beat his pregnant wife to death when he found out she did not vote for the Muslim Brotherhood candidate Morsi. You have to admit women are highly regarded by the Arabs and are not treated like second class citizens.

Well considering an 'honest' newspaper has rarely, if ever existed.......

As for Al-Jeezera, the one thing I like about it offhand is it's social programming. It was also one of the rare mainstream media outlets trying to do some fair coverage of OWS and the Arab Spring.

Bryan:

RE: "...and still are working on it too."

We've been temporarily sidetracked, but the poor, poor Arab nations have no track, no road bed, no clearing of the wilderness and only the instruments of societal destruction with which to work. For the barbarians Ataturk was an aberration now in the process of being properly annihilated. You have more chance at being elected Pope than Muslims and most especially Arab Muslims have of democratizing.
