South Pacific tribes - pre WW2.

Has anything been written or looked into about the indigenous tribes/cultures of the South Pacific before World War 2? Whether it was the Solomon Islands, New Guinea, or any of several other locales, the conflict essentially destroyed their way of life. Studying them would have probably be a treasure trove of information for an anthropologist back then.

Yes, there's an extensive anthropological literature on this region and period. One of the classics of 20th century anthropology is Bronislaw Malinowski's "Argonauts of the Western Pacific". It's pretty readable, though encyclopedic - covers every aspect of life.

That's quite a compliment coming from the greatest human being ever to live. Back in the 60's I went to grad school in anthropology for a couple of years. I didn't stick with it but I learned some interesting things.
