Your choice can be a short story, novella or full novel, but you can only pick one. It didn't have to be published this year, only read this year.

I just realized that I didn't post my own.
My favorite horror read this year easily goes to Seed.
It has an ending that feels like a punch in the face. It was AWESOME!

D. Sippel says:
Charlene, I am also a fan of "Seed", but if I had to go with only 1 that I read this year, even though I read it for the first time 25+ years ago, upon re-read Ghost Story by Peter Straub stands the test of time and is about as good as horror gets in my book.

recluse says:
I'll second that.
I've reread Ghost Story at least a half a dozen times and it still has the same impact it did when I first picked it up.
As for what I've read this year, the jury is still out.

Please do me a favor, D. Sippel. Please go back and click on that link for Ghost Story, and please click the make available for Kindle link?
That is one of my favorite books of all time and I would love to reread it.
I've reread it once before, but it was years and years ago. I have often wondered if it would still hold up today.

Slights (Angry Robot) is not a traditional horror novel -- it's psychological, a downward spiral into the life of an emotionally scarred sociopath. Warren's manipulation of the protagonist's voice is nothing short of sublime. That said, I don't think the book is for everyone; it's NOT a thriller, though it is a compelling read. I recommend it very highly to anyone looking for something a little different.

I'd say Book of Horrors - a lot of stories by established authors, plus some ones that were new to me. The level of quality was exceptionally high...

cult reads says:
I read Excerpts from the everyday unknown.
Never read anything quite like it.
Never read Ghost story. Did they make a film of that with Fred Astaire?

recluse says:
Yes, they did.
The book is fantastic.
The movie is pure garbage.

LOL!! I agree with recluse all the way on this one!

J. Fields says:
YES! Same for me: Seed - I've recommended this book so much I should get a percentage of the royalties! I've even loaned it out a few times to friends. They all loved it! I'm dying for another book from this author.

J. Fields says:
@ Stephen Guth

The best horror novel you READ this...I don't know if one you've written qualifies. Don't you read novels too?

Ghost Story is fabulous. I love Straub's books, even though they come out about 10 years apart LOL

I picked that one up, Stephen, but haven't read it yet.

J. Fields, I've recommended it everywhere. Everyone I recommended it to seemed to enjoy it very much. Seed
I also hope that she is working on something new.

this is a tough one Charlene ... my vote also goes to Seed it wasn't that big of a book but it sure packed a whallop --- BUT I reread 'Salems Lot this year and that will always be at the top of my list ...
after seeing you mention Ghost Story I thought, there's one I haven't read in awhile and was going to check it out for Kindle -- how can it not be available??? I'll go and 'click' too

Posted on Dec 21, 2011 11:45:34 AM PST
Click, click, click!! Thanks J.! I really want to reread Ghost Story, to see if it stands up to the test of time...and my memory.
Salem's Lot is a darn good read too, I may have to reread it soon.

I got around to reading I am Legend, and it was great. The book also included several short stories. Very nice. I also re-read Salem's Lot for the first time in a while, and it's as good as always.

I can't seem to find Straub's Ghost Story via Kindle. Is it not available, if anyone knows?

In reply to an earlier post on Dec 22, 2011 8:26:33 AM PST
It is not available for Kindle yet, William, much to my chagrin.
IF you wouldn't mind, can you go hereGhost Story and on the left side there is a link to click "I want to read this book on Kindle", can you click it for us?
IT would be much appreciated!
