I watched Maniac Cop 2 last night, so thought I'd do some dusting in the ol' Hall and drop a couple votes on director William Lustig and writer/producer Larry Cohen. MC2 is a solid B-movie, well paced and entertaining throughout.

William Lustig
Larry Cohen
Jacques Tourneur

Hey Kinks - yeah, I tease. As I make the rounds to catch up on all the various horror threads, I saw "The Hell Candidate" referred to a few times recently by you as I have now and agaiin over the past several months. To be honest, I just recently found out about the Thomas Luke thing, which allowed me to buy a used copy at a much more reasonable price. I'll jump over to the Graham thread to carry on and allow the Horror Hall of Fame to continue to collect dust.

Were you just teasing me about Thomas Luke (a name Masterton has used)?

Still on a very enjoyable old school kick, I couldn't resist picking up Classic Monsters Spotlight Collection [Dracula, Frankenstein, The Bride of Frankenstein, Creature from Black Lagoon] (Universal's 100th Anniversary), which was only $11.49 a couple weeks ago. Four CD's of classic horror films, with extras! I am taking my time revisiting these classics, studying Dracula, which for some reason I'm enjoying more now than I ever did. The Horror Hall of Fame is well represented, from Bram Stoker's source material, to Tod Browning's direction, the iconic performance of Bela Lugosi, and don't forget Dwight Frye as Renfield! The documentary is interesting, plus the simultaneously filmed (at night) Spanish version of Drac is included as well! As much as I'd like to appreciate the Spanish version on an equal playing field, the actor who plays Dracula in the Spanish version can't hold a candle to Lugosi. I've also been watching the Lugosi version with the updated Philip Glass soundtrack as performed by the Kronos Quartet and it is very effective, making my view a brand new experience of an old classic. Great stuff, and I haven't even made it to any of the other discs yet: Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, or Creature from the Black Lagoon!

Thanks for the reply Doum - I've seen the MoH episode you reference (I've seen most of them I think) and also read the story by Joe R. Lansdale that it is based on. You've got me a bit psyched on Phantasm 3. I think I'll see if I can check it out.

Hi D.Sippel! I've only seen 1 Black Christmas, i think it was the first one. The phantasm series were great though, i'll agree with you the first one is a real classic. What's good about the 2nd one is that it starts right where the first one ended, same scenes..But its still not as good as the first one. The third one is my favourite "Lord of the Dead", plenty of action, nice special fx and awesome photography, typical 80's horror! The 4th one "Oblivion" is the strangest one of the series, its not bad but its a little more complex, Ufortunately not as thrilling as the 3rd one...I also really enjoyed Masters of Horror - Don Coscarelli - Incident on and off a Mountain Road and i would strongly reccomend it.

I've seen the first two Maniac Cop movies. They were mostly funny, but not bad at all.I still need to get my hands on the 3rd one."Maniac" is on his way right now, the photos on google and reviews on amazon convinced me. it appears to be Lustig's classic so i want it, im sure i wont be disapointed.

Thanks for the links Doum666. I've only seen one of the three (Black Christmas). I think I stopped at Phantasm II, preferring the original over the sequel. Does Phantasm III rank with the first two?

I can't recall ever seeing Maniac, but have Maniac Cop 2 in queue to view. Which William Lustig films have you seen and is Maniac the best?

I've been going old school lately, with a focus on Vincent Price, Peter Cushing & Christopher Lee. I watched Scream and Scream Again the other night, and as disjointed and odd a film that it is, I was fairly enthralled throughout. I wouldn't classify it as a good film, but it certainly is entertaining. Even the music is cool, if you can appreciate odd 1970's rock. The Abominable Dr. Phibes / Scream & Scream Again (Vincent Price)

My votes for today along with some related classics!

Bob Clark - Black Christmas (Special Edition)
Don Coscarelli - Phantasm III: Lord of the Dead
William Lustig - Maniac (30th Anniversary Edition)

The Horror Hall of Fame welcomes Bruce Campbell as its latest inductee!

Don Coscarelli advances past the 75% mark to 16.

Jacques Tourneur continues his momentum all the way to the 75% mark.

With only two spots left in what will most likely be the final inducted class to the Hall, Coscarelli and Tourneur both appear to be a lock.

Connie,

There was a short lived annual Oscars-style show hosted by Robert Englund from 1989 to 1991. Both Boris Karloff and Vincent Price were inducted the first year.

I saw the Spike annual horror awards show a couple of times, but don't know if they still have it. I would watch an annual award show as long as it respected the history of the genre and didn't just glorify the most heavily marketed of the recent teen focused horror films.

In reply to an earlier post on Nov 2, 2012 10:56:34 PM PDT
I am trying to find out if this is legit or not as there is a REAL Horror Hall of Fame. Vincent Price was inducted into as the Ist person way back, oh heck just a couple of years before he died. I remember watching a special TV show which they run almost every year to the horror fans and pass out awards. It runs on Spike TV.
