"Cover" versions of Ornette Coleman's "Lonely Woman."

Hi all. Ornette's "Lonely Woman" is one of my fave ever jazz tunes, one that I have represented in my collection not only through his original and the "covers" of it by his closest musical associates (Cherry, Haden, Redman, etc.), but also through the renditions of folks such as the MJQ, Lester Bowie and Diamanda Galas. That it has been oft-performed by others, that's for sure. Just the other day, I sampled one of the most recent renditions of it, that of Dave King's (The Bad Plus) new piano trio. (Not bad, by the way.) Anyway... I would like to be exposed to new (to me) "covers" of this tune. And I was hoping that you, dear reader, could possibly share with me your fave version of it/whatever comments you may/might have regarding it. Thanks, and have a good one!

Hello nup,

"Lonely Woman" is one of my favorites as well: poignant demonstration of Ornette's unique melodic gift. I'm guessing you heard the excellent Geri Allen/Haden/Motian version, off "Etudes". There's also tenor saxman JD Allen's worthy cover (a sax/bass duo) on "In Search Of". I'm listening right now to Brad Meldhau/Kevin Hayes piano duo version: interesting. I think the "original" MJQ cover is brilliant. That's pretty much what I've heard. A search in allmusic will give you the bulk of it. Good search !

hi, nup; i second this tune... and have a short review about miroslav vitous' version :)

Thank you to everyone who has replied thus far.

Simon- with all of the Haden and Motian that I have in my collection (and it's a fair amount), I do not have that title w/ Geri Allen. Thanks for the tip! I'll need to check it out.

MIsanthrope- exhaustive, to be sure. Some renditions there that I was completely unaware of.

Ali- I own that disc. And consider it to be one of the finest ECMs of recent vintage. How could I neglect mentioning that title/that rendition?

Anyone else have any comments about a favorite performance of this great tune?
