Last Sunday, Sonny Rollins was at the White House to receive the well deserved 2011 Kennedy Center Honors from President Obama and then at the annual Kennedy Center gala, which will be broadcast on Dec. 27 on CBS. This is the second time in two weeks I find myself writing about Sonny. For many years I was a Rollins fan much more than a Coltrane fan but then I grew up and realized that they are two players of equal stature but in different ways. I think the award is well deserved and a bit over-due.

My question: Who are some of the living Jazz musicians you would like to see get this award?

Just off the top of my head I am going to say Bob Brookmeyer for one, Jimmy Heath. Benny Golson and Phil Woods. I can think of many more but I'll leave it up to you guys to giveyour opinions.

Sam Rivers. Yusef Lateef. Not that either's ever going to receive it.

Sonny first.

I have to agree with Jimmy Heath, Rivers and Lateef. Clark Terry; Cecil Taylor; Anthony Braxton. Probably Archie Shepp. Roy Haynes. I think maybe Herbie Hancock is deserving, as well.

Maybe Terry already received it? Not sure.

They should start with the oldest, I think. Roy Hayns is in his 80's I believe.

Not sure about Health, but everyone on this list (other than Herbie, Braxton, Shepp...and Ornette who should be added) is older than Sonny. I know that Clark Terry, Lateef and Cecil Taylor are beyond 90 now! So strange that these guys' music still sounds so FRESH after all this time. To those still active (I'm not so sure how much C. Terry is active anymore), the music they make now is just as fresh as their stuff from the 60's on. Timeless music; never seems to get old.

I'm still waiting for the "The Kennedy Center is a stuffy, out-of-touch bunch of rich white men patting each other on the back" post.

Hi Art Johnson, if we are lucky such small mindedness may not happen. Happy New Year, Sonny' site is worth a look at, re what has just happened. He himself sees it as an award to Jazz and all his hero's and long gone friends and contempory's for what jazz has brought to the world of music.

I think when they started the music Sonny would have rather been playing.

a musician that deserves recognition in the field of jazz is houston person! he has played with some of the greats and continues to deliver in his own created style (including all genres of music). there are many more and hopefully these talented persons will be remembered in some way; thus inspiring the younger generation. the presentations should be in a more relaxed atmosphere. yes, keep it honorable, however, the musicians should be free to play and not be expected to give a performance in a "stuffy" environment. i'm certain the two centers (kennedy and lincoln could make arrangements)........mr. rollins sure held his "cool".
