Simon says:
In a recent interview with The Guardian, Denzel Washington mentions an intriguing Monk project:

"The role he'd really like to play is that of jazz legend Thelonious Monk; he has a script, and ponders that 'I'm talking about it more, so maybe I'm talking myself into it.' "

While we wait for Don Cheadle to do his Miles project, thoughts about Denzel/Monk ?

I think that Denzel might do a half decent job. But, the big question is whether or not Hollywood would make a major ****-up of it like they did with Billie Holiday's life story. With a good script and Eastwood directing, it might be a project worth doing. Whether it would make money or not is a whole different matter.

Good points, Mr. P., but though I appreciate Clint E.'s work, I wouldn't pick him to direct. I thought "Bird" was a little boring to be honest, much too "classic" in its form (the form not fitting the content, the man, the music). I'd love to see a jazzman get something of a "I'm Not There" treatment (the multifaceted Bob Dylan biopic directed by Todd Haynes in 2007). Something as original, as daring: a movie that would be to cinema what jazz is to music ("the sound of surprise")...

Don Cheadle seems to be headed in this direction for his Miles project: http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2012/jan/03/don-cheadle-miles-davis-movie

Mr. P says:
IMHO Denzel Washington one of the greatest actors in USA today. So more than pleased to see he interested.

Clint's Bird was intersting but a little tv movie in parts. Though the acting was exceptional.

Personally, there's only been one Jazz biopic that has been an extraordinary piece of art that truly matches the artist themselves and that's Taylor Hackford's 'Ray'. One of the greatest American films, imho.

And I feel probably the greatest music biopic. If Hackford was able 2 do and match the same; that would be fitting. Or the only other director to take the project should be Spike Lee.

Lee was once linked to the Miles Davis project....which woulda been very interesting....but the whole project has had so much conflicting news surrounding it. And, while respect to Don Cheadle [Sammy Davis Jr yes....Miles Davis - Hell No!!].....not a good casting.

The actor Omar Epps should be cast as Miles....he has the acting chops [he's done more than 'House'] and he has a much stronger resemblance.

My default position is, if u cant give the film the full budget, time, thought & resepect the subject deserves.....leave it alone!!

[This was Q's thinkin ....he has the rights to Dinah Washington's story and Oprah Winfrey was in talks to star....but they both felt the project was best left alone if it couldnt be done justice.]

Simon,
Never got to see "I'm Not There" unfortunately. Wishful thinking, maybe, on your part. But, we are used to jazz being short-changed on most fronts, are we not? Nevertheless, would love to see this project get off the ground. Given, I believe, the friendship between T.S.Monk and Clint and the fact that T.S. would surely be involved in some capacity or other, it's possible that Clint might be in the frame for directing despite the arguments about whether or not he might have done better with "Bird". At least, he has a proven and undisputed feel for jazz which has to be as good a starting point as any.

Cheadle would be better as Monk.

Nikica Gilic says:
I'd agree with Frank Alan Hush - Cheadle might be the best choice....
Although there's this guy who plays the hero's FBI chief in that SF TV show "Fringe" (I've seen him in "Oz" as well)---
He could gain a few pounds to make it more convincing though...

I like Cheadle as an actor, but I don't see any Monk in him (in body or in vibe). Miles, yes, sure.
Someone mentioned Wendell Pierce (the "Treme" trombonist): physically at least, it fits quite well.

Jeffrey Wright doesn't look the part, but he certainly could play an "ambiguous" character like Monk.
