Can you use the Kindle app on the iphone to borrow books for free? Or do you have to have an actual Kindle device?

The name of that program is Kindle Owners' Lending Library.

Yes - it is available only to and via an actual Kindle device - the various apps won't work.

EtA: That device must also be registered to the primary account of the Amazon Prime Member

How do I share my books on my Kindle with my Kindle app on my Android phone? I have the very first Kindle.

Just register the app to your amazon account and all your books will be available to download.

Dog Lover says:
If all the apps and the device are registered to the same account, use the "Manage Your Kindle" feature (top right on every Amazon page as part of the "Your Account" drop-down).

You can deliver any Amazon Kindle book you've purchased to any of the devices and Kindle apps you have registered to that account.

Rick G says:
Within the Kindle App, there should be an option to view books on your device and books in the cloud. As long as your app is registered to the same account as your Kindle, you should see all of the books you've purchased in the cloud selection. Click on them and they should download to your android app (at the same location as you last read them on your Kindle)
