I have recently returned from my masochistic perusal of Ann Somerville's blog, a near perfect blend of horror and comedy. In her latest post, Ms Somerville gives us charts to demonstrate her low sales, and this in spite of her near superhuman efforts to ingratiate herself with the vigilantes on the Amazon forums: not only does she attack other authors at every opportunity, but she starts threads demanding authors take oaths of honesty wherein she alternately flagellates herself and plugs her blog and books every chance she gets. And yet, this doesn't seem to have helped her sales.
Meanwhile Splinker, widely despised on these forums but with a small following of undomesticated outlaws, seems to be doing about the same amount of sales.
So I have to ask: which strategy should an indie, all green and wet behind the ears, choose? And why?
