Laurie S. says:
I'm 57, also female, and this has been my all-time favorite book since I read it a bunch of years ago. It's an amazing book, and I happened across this thread when I was searching to assess the appropriateness of it for my 13-year-old granddaughter, who is super-smart but also does super-bad in school because she just doesn't work. Her mom keeps taking away things like computer, etc., but it doesn't seem to motivate her to try anything, outside of drawing and video games. So now we're thinking a punishment of reading in the living room or dining room, with her parents nearby. I don't think it would spoil her from reading, because she already doesn't like to read, so we figure that it's better than having her sit in her room doing nothing. And one of the things she hasn't done is her required Accelerated Reader books/quizzes, and Boy's Life has a pretty high score. But it also is listed for grades 9-12 so I am just looking for content. I think she'd be fine, but I wanted to check. Anyway, I sure wish she had the love of reading that I had at her age, and I think she would absolutely adore the storyline in this book. So I will keep my fingers crossed!

Yes me too even though I am female and live in the Channel Islands, it's the touches of magic that children feel and believe and how he is growing up

It's excellent as always, G! I can't wait for the next Corbett book either. The title is River Of Souls, I believe. I'm psyched!

OMG, I bought it and can't wait to read it. I hope he starts putting out new books pretty soon, and I hope he is free to digitally publish said new works through his new publisher.

The Matthew Corbett series is my favorite, and I can't wait until the new book is published. I am quite happy that the older books are FINALLY being kindle-ized.

I'm doing well, Charlene. Been away for a while, I know. There was so much ick going on with the boards that I took a little vacation.

Hey girl, how are you doing?

I don't think there a whole lot objectionable in the book. As stated, the limited use of bad language/behavior is limited to the "bad" characters. It's such a wonderful book. He's going to love it.

Hello, RG! I don't remember anything in it that would be inappropriate for a 13 year old. It's been over a year since I re-read it, though.
There is some language in it (swearing, racial epithets) that some parents objected to. Earlier in this thread you can find a link to a video where Mr. McCammon vigorously defended the book to the school board and he later won. He deliberately had only the "bad" people in the book use bad language. There's not a lot of it, but there is some.
I hope he enjoys it if you do decide to let him. It's a wonderful story. :)

Any recommendations on an appropriate age for reading Boy's Life? I have a almost 13 year old grandson, an avid reader that I think would love this book. It has been years since my children read this and are not really sure about recommending it. I did notice that this book is now on many school reading lists but thought I would get some other opinions. Oh, he is in 8th grade this year.
Thanks!

I agree, Swan Song all the way! Say hello to Swan and Sister for me.

I just love this book and I'm just tickled to see that most everyone else loves it too. :)

I finished it today, hijacked a friend's FB discussion about comics and now have my sister and a few friends reading Boy's Life and a discussion of what to read next. Gone South or Swan Song?

I am going to buy a paper copy of this book. It's easier for me to flip thru paper when I'm trying to reference a section and so that I can loan it to friends who don't have a Kindle.
