I received this Kindle as a gift just in December. It died, so I charged it. I waited until the light was green and did everything I normally do, but I can't turn in on!
I've tried googling a solution, but so far all I've hear is to slide the power button for "x amount of seconds" -- I've tried all that and it doesn't work.

Does this mean I have to get a new kindle or is there something simple I'm missing here?

I received my Kindle as a Christmas gift in December. It has stopped working. The slide does not turn it on and I put it on the charger and no light at all. Just not working. Don't know how to proceed. Would like some input.

My husband and I have our own kindles. My kindle is working and picking up a signal, his is not. He used it last night and it worked fine. It is fully charged and we have tried restarting it. Any other ideas we should try?

@Arlene: Read the post above yours.

Edit: Is the Kindle in the unlighted Amazon leather cover? If yes, then take it out and see if that improves things. If yes, then get a refund from Amazon on the cover.

Hummm.. it DOES seem that the Kindle 3rd Gen has a power problem when used with the unlighted Amazon cover. Mine did the same thing from the day I got the cover and put my Kindle in it.
Problem: With Kindle in Amazon cover, it works the first time you turn it on, but if you shut it down to resume later you can't get the Kindle to come back on, TOTAL LOCKUP!! I found a solution in a previous Q&A that if you hold the slide switch on for 30 seconds or more, release and put the kindle down.. don't touch it... it would come back on, blinking and flashing like it woke up from a 20 year sleep and wants to know where it is.. DUHHH!!!
OK, now I have to find out how to get a refund on this Amazon Case...

The problem is with the cover, or rather with the prongs that attach that cover to the Kindle. That is why Amazon stopped selling that cover back in January.

The top prong of the cover powers the lighted version of that cover. On Kindles in the *unlighted* cover, it works its way into the inner workings of the Kindle and causes short-circuits. That causes a variety of problems, including rapid battery drain, freezing, failure to keep your place in the book, and rebooting. They stopped selling that cover in January because of the problems that it causes, sometimes after some months of using it on the Kindle.

Contact CS for a refund. Use the help link at the top right of this page.

EBookEmma says:
Sorry to hear about your cover issue!
I've certainly tried the "slide-and-hold for thirty seconds" method with no luck.
I contacted Amazon via email and I just received a notification saying I should call them and they'll determine if it needs to be replaced.... this sounds to me like it could certainly be a problem with perhaps the battery or even the kindle itself and will, unfortunately, most likely need to be replaced. (Hopefully my warranty covers it! I've only had it for a few months!) However, I'll call them tomorrow and update this discussion on the situation!

Best of luck to us all and thank you for all the help thus far!

Artist says:
Suzanne, did you restart it by turning it off and then back on? That doesn't do anything. A restart is clicking Menu, Settings, Menu again, Restart.

A reboot is holding the on/off button for 30 seconds (time it), release the button, then wait a few minutes for you home page to reappear.
