A. Reader says:
Just got my Fire, and once it syncs to my Amazon account all of my books that I have purchased appear on the Fire. How do I remove these books, or any of the apps or recently viewed movies from the home screen? I dont like the clutter of having everything appear all the time. If anyone can help me I would appreciate it.

"To remove content, press and hold on an item to display the contextual menu, hen select Remove from Device."

For the Book screen:

Removing it from the device just removes the file if you've downloaded it. It doesn't remove the icon for the book. What might help is to choose "Device" instead of "Cloud" from the Book screen. This will only show books that are physically on your device at the moment.

For the recently used stuff: Good question! A way to remove icons from there or prevent some apps from ever showing up there would be nice. I don't really like the last webpage I visited being displayed there.

What happens if you press and hold on that last webpage? Do you have an option to delete it? (I don't get mine until tomorrow -- just looking at the PDF manual for now.)

I'm guessing the op wants to remove from the carousel. I haven't found a way to do that yet either. All my archived books are there since apparently buying a book puts them there even if they weren't delivered to the fire... I just sent feedback through the feedback form asking for a way to clear out the carousel.

Ooh, that's gonna be bad with over 1800 titles. Can you switch to Device (read that someplace, but it might not have referred to the same thing)?

switch to device isn't possible in the carousel... honestly, i'm not super fond of the carousel as a whole. it'd be nice to be able to turn it off... or at least limit what goes in...

I'm in the "Books" Tab -> Trying to remove a book from device. The problem is it was a library borrow. It's expired, but still shows in my Books on the cloud and also in my books on device. When I Tap and hold, the only option is to 'Add to favorites', No Delete option. Suggestions?

I am with you Sydyne! We need to be able to get rid of the books that are expired from the library. My children keep thinking that they can read the book again because it's there and they can't! HELP!

we must be able to remove books we do not desire

I don't know if this helps, but if you want to remove books from the cloud part of the fire, then just delete them off your amazon account from the computer (manage your kindle), then just resync your fire when it is done. As for deleting off carousel, I haven't found a way yet

TuxGirl says:
You can remove from the account (cloud) at Not.sure about the library issue, though.

I would love to be able to choose what is seen on my carousel...I don't like seeing all my books and it gets frustrating...

I've been adding things to favorites and using that as my preferred menu - it's slightly more of a hassle than a quick sort but it beats not being able to edit it.

I'm having the same problem with the expired Library books. Amazon really seems to want us to buy those books!

how do i make favorites the preferred menu

Mr. Me says:
You can CLEAR CAROUSEL by going to settings (at the very top) then choose more. Next choose applications, then filter by all apps. Now choose AppManager, and scroll down to storage and cache. Finally....NUKE them. :) Carousel now clean. Same idea for music, videos, etc.
I still have not been able to delete the user's guide, yet either, but I will. Oh, yes...I will!

Come back tomorrow after using the Fire for a while and let us know what other unintended effects this had. :-)

As far as I'm concerned, it's really sad that half the screen is given over to what I consider the trash can. This is old stuff you did and may never want to do again. It needs to be reduced to a 1-inch strip at the bottom with tiny icons. Then we need all the rest of the area for favorites, preferably without wasting space on a "shelf" graphic. In other words, we need a real desktop with smaller icons that we arrange where we want them. Those would be our favorites -- located where we put them (until we move them again).

I did read that you can make a second favorites shelf; it didn't say how though.

EDIT: Just add a 5th favorite. :-)

Why would you wish to delete the user guide?

Never know when you may need it!

I tried doing this with some of the apps, and for some reason the only effect I had was massive slowdown of the system for about 15 minutes, and some excess sluggishness. Then everything was back in the carousel again...

I'm sorry to say that I'm returning my Kindle Fire. Not being able to control what is displayed in the Carousel is a dealbreaker for me. My privacy is important. And just toggling from "Device" to "Cloud" view is useless, as anyone (friend, family member, colleague) who wants to play with the Fire can toggle back to Cloud view just as easily. Nor do I want to delete books from my online Amazon library (and lose them permanently) just to keep them from displaying in my carousel. I should be able to specify that some items in my library are "Private" and should not display on my device unless downloaded.

But that's exactly my point. I don't WANT to keep secret matters on my Fire. I want to be able to CHOOSE what is displayed on my Fire, not to have this choice made for me by Amazon. If you never read anything you'd rather your boss or in-laws or children (or ?) didn't know you read, then you'll have no problem with the Fire. I, on the other hand, want to be able to read anything and everything -- from above-reproach classic literature to trashy adult books -- without having my device advertise my complete library to anyone who wants to try out my e-reader for a few minutes. If this isn't a problem for you, you may love the Kindle Fire. :-) But it is an issue for me and, if the threads I've seen are any indication, a fair number of other people.

That doesn't work . The only contextual message is " Add to favorites"
