Can I register and download books to a kindle without a wifi connection? I've connected it to a pc using the USB and tried to register, however it keeps asking me to connect wifi.

This will help,

Also this will help,

You may want to make a copy of those, print copy. At sometime you will need to make at least one Wi-Fi connection so the Kindle will show second page of settings and other items. Some place like a Starbucks has free Wi-Fi hotspots.

Hello Stacey McCastlain,

If you are registering your Kindle from the device itself, you will need a Wireless connection.
If you don't have a WiFi connection but your Kindle connects through 3G, you can try to manage the registration directly from the device:

On E-Ink devices:
On your Kindle, go to the Settings screen and select the "Deregister" link.

On Kindle Fire:
On your Kindle Fire, tap the "Quick Settings" icon then tap "More" from the Settings menu, tap on "My Account," and then tap "Deregister."

Now When you connect your Kindle to the computer, it will become a Hard Drive, you will not be able to get internet connection through the USB.
In order to register your Kindle using a computer you must visit Manage Your Kindle at

To learn how to transfer content to your Kindle using a USB, please visit the link below to our Help Pages:

I hope this helps!
Best Regards,

On the kidnle Fire when I go to my account only register is shown not deregister? How do I register without wi-fi?

You don't. You have to connect to WiFi to register. You're also going to find the Fire of limited utility without a WiFi connection, as that's the only way it can connect to the Internet.

You can go to a public wifi hotspot and register your device there, its once-off. After that you can load books using a usb cable.

@prairierose: If you read the other posts above yours, you'll find that answer is given there - you need to make a wifi connection to Amazon to complete the registration.

Thank you-I am new at this computer stuff and what seems so straightforward to most is sometimes a bit more difficult to grasp for us.
