Kindle Fire "Locked" and "Unlocked" in Quick Settings

What exactly does the Locked/Unlocked button in the Quick Settings do? I don't notice a difference in behavior with it toggled either way. Help says "Lock: Tap to lock or unlock your Kindle Fire." but I don't see anything changing.

I know I can set a device password in the Security section of Settings. I'm just curious what that toggle is supposed to do.
