How do I change the language on my kindle?

Posted on Dec 24, 2011 12:16:52 PM PST
What model Kindle is it? If it is a Fire, you cannot. For others, check the Menu, Settings section.

Hello Sandra J. Hudnor,

Thank you Bruce Boyle for you input to this post.

The menus and default dictionary on Kindle can be changed to support U.S. English, UK English, German, French, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese and Italian languages, only on Kindle 4th Generation. The rest of the Kindle do not support this feature at this moment.

To change the language on Kindle 4th Gen:

1. Select Settings from the Home screen Menu.
2. Navigate to page 2 of the Settings page and select to "Set" next to the Device Language heading.
3. Press the 5-way controller to select.
4. You will then be prompted to select a language on the device.
5. Once selected click "OK" to confirm the change.

To complete the change the device will restart. Any content on Kindle will remain on the Home screen. If you have a password associated with your Kindle you will be prompted to enter it once the device restarts.

I hope this helps!
Best Regards,

J. Daniels

I have a Kindle Touch. May i add a spanish dictionary? I actually added, but it´s on English dictionary section, and if i try to use it, my kindle says there´s no dictonary for that language. I´ve been reading many forums and there´s many people who say they can do it in a KT, and others say it´s impossible. I speak spanish and it´s so important for me to use a spanish dictionary!

I have a kindle model # D01100, How do I change the langauage?

In reply to an earlier post on Dec 26, 2011 6:05:57 AM PST
That's not a valid model. Models are the first FOUR digits of a serial number, and I can't find any that start D011. It's either B011 (Touch, WiFi only) or D01E (Fire).

In any case neither of these support changing the language.

Yes, even that one. ALL the Kindles have English.

What you are saying is that they should, and I totally agree. But in as much as you do not and cannot see what I am talking about, I stand by my statement. This one does not have English and Amazon is getting it back. I have requested a RMA and it will be going back.
No need to reply.

My son gave me a kindle touch, model D01200 for my birthday. Everything seems to be in German. How can I get it into English? I can't read the instuctions, register, etc. What do I do now????.....

In reply to an earlier post on Jun 17, 2012 6:28:40 PM PDT
No, what I'm saying is it isn't possible. It's built into the firmware - there's no malfunction that could cause it not to be there. You just need to select it in the Settings, which may be tricky since obviously you're looking at non-English menus, but if you can find the setting you CAN select English.

To put a Kindle Touch into English from German:
1 - Home button (four bars below the screen)
2 - Menu (upper-right corner)
3 - Einstellungen (second from bottom)
4 - Gerateoptionen
5 - Sprache und Worterbucher
6 - Sprache
7 - English (UK or US, your preference)
8 - OK
9 - OK
Wait for it to restart and it will be in English

I also have a model D01100. Right on the back of the Kindle it says, "MODEL NO. D01100". I also cannot change the language from German to English. Any suggestions?

CBRetriever says:
you have the Basic Kindle - follow the second set of instructions

if it's the Touch, follow this:

You don't need to do the words, just count and this works for all languages

Home Page
7th listing
3rd listing
4th listing
1st listing
English or whatever you want

and the Touch will reboot

This will work (languages = German / French / Italian / Spanish / Portuguese) for the Basic:

1. Press Menu button.
2. Select settings (9th option in the menu) = Einstellungen / Parametres / Impostazioni / Configuracion / Configuracoes
3. press the "next page" bar on the side of the Kindle two times.
4. Select (may be second listing on the menu) - Geratesprachen / Langue du Peripherique / Imposta / Establecer / Estabelecer (possibly)
5. Einstellen / Definer / Lingua Dispotivo / Idioma del dispositivo / Idioma do dispositivo
6. OK

kindle will reboot
