Look at the pictures here (they are small though).

http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html/ref=help_search_1-1?ie=UTF8&nodeId=200317150&qid=1276571335&sr=1-1

The top set of 2 (black + white) have no number keys on the keyboard. We call this K3 (or Kindle 3rd generation).
The next picture down is what we call K2 (Kindle 2nd generation). It has a toggle stick to move the cursor.
The next two below that are large Kindles, 10-inch screens instead of 6-inch.
The very bottom picture is the original Kindle we call K1.

We think our names are easier to understand than Amazon's names.

While you're on this page, grab a PDF copy of the user manual for the Kindle you decide you have. You can skim it on the computer while exploring the Kindle.

The serial numbers may not start with a D but the model number on the back does. Think this is what the poster is referring to...

Yes, they indeed start with a D. Mine is model D00901. That is what it says on the back "Model No D00901".

Apology, there is a difference between serial nr and model nr.
I must say, this is rather confusing, because normally you do not refer to serial number to find out what type of device you have, you refer to model nr. And usually the serial nbr is just some unique long-digit nr that is unique to every single device and not often referred to unless you have warranty claims, factory recalls etc.

Frederik, press Home, Menu, select Settings and look at the Device Info paragraph at the bottom of the page. There you will find the 16-character serial number -- 4 groups of 4 characters that start with B, at least with U.S. Kindles.

Frederik says:
No, I am not from the US, my kindle does not have such a serial number.
In the Settings menu it says Version: Kindle 3.2.1 and a 9 digit nr which starts with a 5.
It is a 3rd generation Kindle with wi-fi, and unlike some webpages say, it does NOT come with 3G.
This site was helpful about the model D00901, but wrong about the 3G:
http://www.kindled00901.org/

Apology !!
I was looking at the software version (right at the bottom of the screen). The Serial nr (under "Device Info") is indeed B008 xxxx xxxx xxxx.
But it does not have 3G

All Kindles come with a user manual already on the home page. However, it's a lot easier to read the PDF version at your computer while you experiment with the Kindle. Here is the list of manuals for Kindles that have been shipped since the first one:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html/ref=help_search_1-1?ie=UTF8&nodeId=200317150&qid=1276571335&sr=1-1

The .azw file is what's on the Kindle. That version can only be read on a Kindle or Kindle app. Get the PDF version of the user's guide.

So, B008 means that you have a wifi-only Kindle 3.

The model numbers actually don't tell you which model you have, which is kind-of silly. That's why we were all asking for the serial number! :)

And you care enough to say this two months after the thread was done?

This post was helpful, but wrong in some ways.

The model number is printed on the back on my Kindle D00901 -- when I do as you say I see version number 3.3etc

Thanks for the help.

I just wanted to thank you for the answer and the link to the mobileread wiki, and to http://mobileread.com itself. Their site has been very helpful.

(of course, in my case, on the same Settings page that shows the serial number, is the line that states:
Network Capability: Wi-Fi and 3G. Kinda says it all, right? :-) )

Sure, the information in the thread was (in some cases) over a year old, but it was new to ME!

B008 = Kindle 3 WiFi K3, K3W
B006 = Kindle 3 3G + WiFi (U.S. and Canada)
B00A = Kindle 3 3G + WiFi (Europe)

Frederik says his has a serial number beginning with B008 and he asked back in October 2011
