Kindle Fire backup/restore?

Ok, this isn't about books, etc - necessarily. And no, the "Cloud" doesn't cut it.

Is there an app that will do a backup/restore of a Kindle Fire, restoring all apps, books, documents (the stuff I either sent from my PC or emailed to my Kindle address), and most importantly ALL SETTINGS, ETC. (Amazon account, email accounts, app settings, etc).

I want something that doesn't rely on a network, wifi, etc since I may neon the road and unable to connect to anything but my laptop, etc. this feature also allows me to set "restore points" if I decide to go back to the "way it was", etc.

Connect your Fire to your computer via USB. Look inside the icon/drive for its contents and copy those folders to your computer. That gets most of the data; it doesn't get the apps though. I haven't turned on hidden files on my computer to see what else is on the Fire, so there may be more you could copy.

Thanks - already guessed that, but that only gives you access to 'sdcard' directory, I believe. I'm assuming that there are lots of other settings/things in the acct, config, data, etc, and root directory ("/"), at a minimum. Not connected right now, but I don't think you can access those from just a USB connection (using AndroExplorer to see those dirs).

How do I send books on my Kindle Fire device back to the cloud...I am getting close to filling up my storage on my device.

@Judy: Tap and hold on the title and then select the appropriate option, probably Remove from Device. That will take the book off the Fire and leave it in the cloud/archive.

Can I back up my address book and notes to the cloud or another program somehow so I don't lose anything?

How do I back up and restore my kindle apps? My tapfish has the message "application tapfish(
has closed unexpectedly. please try again. The stupid game is addicting and I've spent money playing it so I want to save my fish tanks and fishbucks, etc. until I can figure out why the game has stopped working. don't know what to do or how to do it.

The apps themselves are available to download from Amazon as often as you want. The data associated with an app (progress, level, settings, etc.) can't be backed up in most cases.

You should go to Settings, More, Applications, find that game, and do a clear data on it.

Thanks for your quick response

Forgive my ignorance but the word "clear" makes it sound like all my data will be "cleared" as in deleted? I'm trying to find a way to hang on to all of it and get it working again

You'll have to see if the app developer has any answer for you, then. That really isn't a Kindle or Amazon question.

My Kindle Fire no longer rotates the info on the screen as I rotate the Kindle--is there someone to reset it to do that? Rebooting did not fix it.

Click the gear at the top right, then click "Locked" on the left.

TuxGirl says:
Ask them what they set the password to be.

Or, plug into usb, back up your docs, and then reset. There is no way around the parental controls password besides resetting to factory defaults.

I am also looking to backup certain apps. Yes, they are available to re-download but....I have a game which I do not want the latest version. The developer has changed the game into something not very useful for me. Therefore, I would like to preserve/backup this particular version of the game.

Any advice on this matter would be greatly appreciated

Get Astro File Manager or ES File Manager. Use the back-up function to create a back-up copy of the apk file for the app(s) you want to save. Copy those apk files to a safe location.

Q says:
Does that also backup game progress? It didn't seem to for me. It seemed to only back up the actual APK install file.

I'm not sure, but it appears that game progress for many games is kept in the Android partition and can't be backed up unless one has an app specifically that does it. I have an Angry Birds game progress app that backs that up. But most of my games' progress is lost whenever I reset the Fire. And I use the Astro File Manager to backup the apps.

Also, I've noticed the newer edition of Astro File Manager no longer has the app backup section so I've resorted to my older copy of it.

Thank you! Your suggestion did the trick. I just had to figure out how to get the backup prompt. Pressing down on the game icon for a few seconds causes another window to appear with the "backup" as one of the selections!

Okami says:
I got the same answer as Jes M. from Amazon's support: app data (ie game saves, browser bookmarks, email accounts) cannot be transferred or backed up. The silly point is that resetting the device to factory setting is one of the required troubleshooting steps.

When I suggested Amazon should implement a backup feature, that similar products have, the answer was that Amazon is not interested in copying functionalities from competitors...

Kindle Fire is evidently still in its infancy, I hope it grows up quickly, or I'll have to switch platforms.
