My MAC (OS X Lion) updated Java yesterday to Java 7. Java 7 is 64-bit only and Kindle Previewer crashes without loading following the upgrade, with the following error printed to the console: Error: This Java instance does not support a 32-bit JVM. I created this guide to help others get it working again:

Amazon releases a minor update to Kindle Previewer 2.7 software.

There are two known issues for Kindle Previewer for Mac customers running Mountain Lion or OS X Lion v10.7.5 with the Gatekeeper feature enabled. Issue # 1 is related to the Gatekeeper feature identifying the Kindle Previewer application as damaged. Issue # 2 relates to customers encountering the message "Kindle Previewer can't be opened because it is from an unidentified developer." This software release fixes issue # 1 only.

We are currently working on resolving issue # 2. In the interim, we suggest the following one-time workaround. After installation, open the Kindle Previewer application using "ctrl + click" and select "Open" from the menu. This action will bring up the dialog - "Kindle Previewer is from an unidentified developer. Are you sure you want to open it?." Clicking "Open" will allow Kindle Previewer to open and run without requiring this action again in the future.

The updated Kindle Previewer 2.7 can be downloaded from

This has a serious loss of functionality: there's no way to preview a KF8 document in an older device. With the last version, "Kindle Touch" mode could display KF8 docs, and that worked as a preview for Kindle Keyboard as well. Now Kindle Touch has been removed, and plain "Kindle" mode only shows the KF6 version. The Paperwhite and DX modes display KF8, but their dimensions are so different that they don't provide accurate previews.

Can "Kindle Touch" mode be restored?

Hello Kim,

The Kindle Paperwhite skin has a new scale up and scale down feature. You can get to scaled down mode by using the toolbar icon or shortcut key "F2". Please let us know if this helps. Also, Kindle DX skin supports only Mobi7.

Please reach out to if you have further questions.

Just a few comments and questions...

With the new higher resolution Kindle displays will there be an upgrade to the allowed image file size in fixed layout files? 246kb for non-comic FL ebooks is just unacceptable for art books and illustrated works with high quality artwork such as the one I'm currently creating.

At a minimum 1920x1200 pixels for a full page image the jpeg compression will need to be set to a very low quality to get within this limit (not to mention larger sizes that will be necessary for zooming on the 8.9" model), and this will not show off either the art or the Kindle's high resolution screen.

Secondly, why does the comic book-type setting remove all live text functionality? I would like to have the interactive text features available in my current project, but this restricts me to the non-comic setting with its lower image file size restriction. I notice that with no book-type entered all live text functions work, but with the comic book-type entered they do not.

Also, I have noticed that on the 7" Kindle HD the comic setting removes the white space from the space beyond the page (which I like!) while the children book-type does not do so, nor does it do so when no book-type is entered. The black background is highly preferable as it distracts less from the actual page content, so I would like to see this as the default in all book types. Is there a way to add this to non-comic ebooks currently?

Thanks for all the great work you're doing!

I'm using PNG images with custom color pallets (painstaking process of hand-picking the colors used in the PNG image file). The resulting image is MUCH better quality than jpeg and over half the file size. Is there an option when running kindlegen that doesn't re-compress the png images...I think the -o option is valid for jpeg images but doesn't seem to apply to png?...Am I correct?

DEV says:
What are the devices that supports orientation-lock with none value that enables fixed format to view on both landscape and portrait orientation. Because it seem that it works only on Paperwhite version on kindle previewer.

Works on Kindle Fire and Fire HD, as well as the Kindle apps for Android and iOS, according to my own tests, although the iOS app does not yet support fixed layout KF8.

Help! I shouldn't have done it so soon but I did. I updated the KindleGen and I was just finishing doing an epub and making the mobi file from Quark and now all my quotes, bullets and all my 1/m dashes have turned into keystrokes. And I had an audio file that worked just fine in Calibre ... so will have to use that to fix it I suspect.

Does anyone else have this problem?

Yes, William. I have same thoughts. I have 2 comic books selling in Apple's iBooks. The process was difficult but logical. I was able to lock the "landscape" mode as well.
