I've just deregistered/re-registered my K2 and K3. They've gone back to having individual email addresses.

Screen shot at http://blog.diannegorman.net/

I don't have one of the new Kindles, and haven't ordered one, so I can't say if the change applies to them too.

Hmm, perhaps our complaints have been acted upon?

It would seem so. I'd be interested to know whether the new Kindles have also reverted to separate email addresses for each device.

I just checked. No change for me: one address for newer-purchased/reregistered Kindles. Older Ks still show individual addresses.

I didn't see any changes to my old Kindles until I deregistered/re-registered. So I guess that would need to be done for one of the new Kindles to see if anything's changed.

Just for you (since you've been so helpful), I deregistered/unregistered my K4(Baby Kindle) just now.

And, voila! Mirabile scriptu, the listing reverted to one with an edit option and the designation "not set up" instead of "not enabled". I changed the e-mail address to a friendly and unique one for that specific Kindle.

I should note that I had turned OFF everything I could find earlier this week while trying to determine if there were a way to force the return of specific addresses capable of being edited.

I'm going to go fire up a computer with keyboard now and try some test e-mails. Back soon.

And, thanks!

Awww, thanks Tree! That result surprises me a little. I suspect you can no longer set up the global "Send-to-Kindle Email Address" for the K4. That would mean they are indeed rethinking the whole thing (I hope).

I look forward to seeing the results of your tests - and whether archiving still works for Kindles that are 'not set up'.

Back to work ...

Dianne

I am sitting here in a nest of all the Swithin Kindles that I could gather!

Intermediate test reports:

Test e-mail sent to new friendly-and-specific e-mail address for K4: received with no problem. K4 is wi-fi only. That e-mail did not appear on any of the other Kindles I checked. These include:

with original specific addresses: K3 wi-fi and K3 3G
with address newly changed from assigned single: K2
with assigned single address after trans-registering: DX

I de-registered/re-registered the K2. An odd thing happened in that there were collections imported automatically -- and I don't know from where. (We have syncing between Kindles turned off.)

I tried sending a test e-mail to the K2. The second one came through. I had forgotten that I had not enabled Whispernet delivery for the non-wi-fi Kindles. Once I did that, the e-mail came through to that Kindle only.

I need to return these Kindles to folks before I get lynched! I'm going to try and figure out the Collection importing oddity before doing anything with the DX. (That's the one I just finished setting up for my father-in law -- complete with twelve collections specific to his interests!)

"I am sitting here in a nest of all the Swithin Kindles that I could gather!"

Haha - great visual, Tree.

That thing with collections is a bit worrying. Could it have been old collections the K2 once had? If not, it's doubly worrying.

Nobody says:
Swithin, your test doesn't answer the question at the heart of Amazon's changes: what will happen to the new Kindles we're still waiting for. I have the $79 Kindle. Amazon initially assigned an email address to that one, but later they did let me change that assigned address and I'm able to keep the existing addresses on the older Kindles on my account. But if I de-register and re-register the old Kindles, they are going to be part of the everybody-gets-the-document email chain unless I disable them. I was on a page in my MYK area that showed me that would happen. I think all the new Kindles are going to end up with the same email address, even if we create that address ourselves. Our older Kindles can stay separate, but only as long as we don't un-then-re-register them. Therefore, Amazon has done nothing to response to our concerns other than let us change the email address they assign to our new Kindles.

In Amazon's response to you, they gave you instructions about side-loading a file. That's how it's always been for "free" docs on Kindles for as long as there's been a choice of wifi and 3G Kindles.

Hi Nobody

This is Tree.

In response to "Our older Kindles can stay separate, but only as long as we don't un-then-re-register them."

Today I have un-then-re-registered:

two of the Kindles locked to the "single address"
(the K4/Baby shipped 9/24 and the K2 transferred on 10/2)

an older K3 (5/2011)

On each, after re-registering, there were device-specific e-mail addresses. Only the DX remains with the "single address".

That's in conflict with what Amazon says will happen. See the link I posted in that other thread where you and Dianne are discussing the email addresses.

Edited to add the link to Amazon's statement about this:

Nobody: have you seen my new blog post at http://blog.diannegorman.net/ ? The situation changed for me when I did the de/re-register thing 24 hours ago.

Nobody says:
Yes, I read your latest blog entry. But none of your Kindles is new, right? Old ones are grandfathered in re email addresses. I can change my old email addresses to the send-to address if I un-re-register them (which I don't want to do), but I won't have that option when my next two new ones arrive (the Fire and the Touch). They'll have the same email address as my Baby Kindle. At least that's what Amazon says in the link I posted above.

In reply to an earlier post on Oct 10, 2011 7:47:27 AM PDT
We really need someone with a post Sep 28 K4 to do some de/re-registers :) Tree has done it with a K4, a K3 and K2, and they all now have separate email addresses. But the K4 was shipped Sep 24, so it's still not conclusive.

Bufo to the rescue! Thank you!

But note that Amazon indicates the system isn't perfect. They say to call them if you're having trouble getting the single address to apply to all your Kindles.

May your Mindle arrive on time, Bufo! I just read the comments in your blog where you said you would do some testing and mentally cheered :) I look forward to seeing the results.

Of course, it may all have changed again by the weekend :)

LaurieM04 says:
I have a brand new K4 which was just delivered on Saturday, so it was definitely shipped after September 28. I de/re-registered it earlier today and can confirm that I now have the ability to assign it an individual email address, just like any of the K3/KKeyboards previously registered to my account.

I haven't done any other testing with it, but I hope this helps anyway!

In reply to an earlier post on Oct 10, 2011 7:53:45 PM PDT
Nobody says:
Okay, now please de-register and re-register your old Kindles (if you have more than one old Kindle) and see if they are assigned the same address you gave your K4 (IF you're willing to risk having all your Kindles having the same email address).

In reply to an earlier post on Oct 10, 2011 7:59:51 PM PDT
Laurie, you're an angel!!!!

I think this means Amazon are definitely re-thinking the whole thing.

Just to get it clear in my mind, can you please confirm whether:
1. The K4 is now listed as 'Not set up' under Auto Deliver?
2. The 'edit' link is now next to the K4's email address, and not in the 'Auto Deliver' column?
3. You have no Touch devices on order, so you no longer have a '`Send-to-Kindle E-mail Address' section above the 'E-Mail Settings' section?

Thank you for taking the trouble to do the testing :)

PS: I've just seen Nobody's reply. I'm pretty certain your K3s will keep their individual addresses if they're de/re-registered (though I don't know until somebody actually does it, of course).

I'm just going by what Amazon says. They say un-re-registering the old Kindles -- if you have more than one old Kindle and you also get one of the new Kindles -- will give all your Kindles the same email address. If that's no longer the case, they need to change the info they're giving out. My K4 is designated as having the send-to address even though I changed the address from the one assigned by Amazon.

Here's the Amazon info I'm talking about (you can disable de-re-registered Kindles from receiving documents, but they'll still have the same address as the newly registered Kindles and who wants to keep enabling/disabling various Kindles?):

Associating Kindles to your Send-to-Kindle E-mail Address

With our new improved personal document service, we create a single Send-to-Kindle e-mail address and associate it with your Amazon account. You can select which of the Kindle devices registered to your Amazon account will receive the documents by default.

Specific details regarding Send-to-Kindle e-mail address are below:

When you register a new Kindle to your account for the first time, you will generate a Send-to-Kindle e-mail address. This Send-to-Kindle e-mail address is associated with your Amazon account and will be the e-mail address associated with all additional Kindle devices that you register to your account in the future.
If you already have one Kindle device registered to your Amazon account, your existing Kindle e-mail address is your Send-to-Kindle email address and is now associated to your Amazon account. As you register more devices, they will get the same Send-to-Kindle e-mail address.
If you already have two or more Kindle devices registered to your Amazon account before 28th September 2011, your existing e-mail addresses continue to be associated to specific devices. We will assign a Send-to-Kindle e-mail address when you register a new Kindle device or re-register one of the existing devices. You can have all your existing devices use the same account level e-mail address by re-registering them. Here is how you can associate all your Kindle devices to your single Send-to-Kindle e-mail address:
Access the Manage Your Kindle page.
Select Manage Your Devices from the left hand menu.
Take note of the Kindle serial number of the Kindle you want to associate to your new Send-to-Kindle e-mail address.
Deregister the Kindle.
Select Register a Kindle from the left hand menu.
Enter the serial number of the Kindle you want to register.

Tip: Hover over the links below for information on how to find the serial number on your Kindle model.
Kindle 1st Generation Kindle 2nd Generation Kindle DX Kindle Keyboard

The device will automatically get the new Send-to-Kindle e-mail address for your account.
Repeat this process for other Kindles.

Once all the Kindles on your Amazon account have been re-registered, all the Kindle devices on your account will be associated with your Send-to-Kindle e-mail address.
Tip: Here is how you can associate your Kindle device to your single Send-to-Kindle e-mail address from your device:
Kindle 1st Generation Kindle 2nd Generation Kindle DX Kindle Keyboard

Note: If you are experiencing problems associating all the Kindle device(s) on your account to a single Send-to-Kindle e-mail address, please contact customer service via phone.

Here is how you can select the Kindle device(s) which will receive the personal documents sent to your Send-to-Kindle e-mail address:

Access the Manage Your Kindle page.
Select Personal Document Settings from the left hand menu.
Select Edit next to your Send-to-Kindle e-mail address. Select the devices which should receive the personal documents.
Click on "Update" to confirm the changes.

Nobody: I've been a computer programmer for 30 years. I have considerably less faith in the accuracy of documentation than you do :) Especially when it relates to a feature that appears to have been hastily reverted after discovering the implementation may not have been all that great in practice.

I too continue to see the documentation quoted. But what happens in practice (for me) is not what the documentation says will happen.

Nobody says:
I don't understand why you think the feature has reverted. Yes, we can change our email addresses. Even the one Amazon assigns. But there is nothing to indicate that they've changed the single send-to address "feature" (I call it something else!) that'll apply to new Kindles. Old Kindles can continue to have their own email addresses. We know that. We know the K4s get an Amazon-assigned address that we are able to change if we wish. We know that we can't change the address on an old Kindle to match that on another old Kindle. We know that we can change the address on an old Kindle to match the single send-to address on a new Kindle. And what I think we'll find out is that whatever address we've put on our K4s will be the same address on our Fires and Touches regardless of how we feel about that. What remains to be seen is if the documentation is wrong, as you suggest, or whether it's correct. We'll know in late November. There's also hope that Amazon will change it's mind (and, therefore, it's documentation) by then. But right now, there's no indication that they've wavered from what they say in their documentation.

Edit: Dianne, unless I've misunderstood your blog, you don't have one of the new Kindles -- therefore what has happened in practice (for you) does not apply here. Am I wrong about that? Do you have a K4? The documentation makes clear these changes apply to those who've purchased the new models.

In reply to an earlier post on Oct 10, 2011 8:35:31 PM PDT
That's why I asked Laurie to clarify some things. I could be entirely wrong. I've said many times that I don't have a new Kindle - if I did I'd just satisfy my curiosity by testing it myself.
