chronic kindle killer

I swear this time it wasn't my fault. I didn't drop it or sit on it. But when I turned it on..... BLACK LINES. Couldn't even do a hard reset. Dead dead dead. My poor KK. I just got it, replacing the one I did drop and killed. Maybe I should be banned from owning a kindle.... naw... must have it. Target was a little, shall we say "dicey" about replacing this one as it's the 2nd one I've taken back in a short time. Then they looked at it. No problem, gave me their last white one. I hope this one lives a very long life.

Freda, think you have been around long enough to ignore Fud's rudeness. Sometimes we just run into a weird streak - Hope this one last's forever!

I have to say it! I can't help myself!

Just re-read the thread title, and thought "well, given how many of us love our kindles, name them, treat them like members of the family, etc, you're almost begging for a murder charge there". Maybe we'll let you off with manslaughter though LOL

I bought my twin daughters Kindles for their thirteenth birthday last June and between them, we have been through SEVEN Kindles! It's always the same problem: the screen freezes and there are multiple black lines on the screen.
Fortunately, we bought ours directly from Amazon and their customer service is always very helpful and polite, and they send out a replacement overnight. Unfortunately, they are completely clueless about why this keeps happening. My daughters swear they are not dropping or sitting on their Kindles, and I believe them because they are generally careful with things meaningful to them.
Our theory is that close contact with their cell phones in their backpacks causes the Kindle to malfunction, so now they are making an effort to keep them separated. Give this a try and see if ithelps.
But really, this technology should not be this fragile!

S. Prewitt says:
My theory is that putting Kindles in backpacks is causing the failures; especially if the backpacks also contain hard items that can press against the Kindle's e-ink screen, like hardcover books. This would be a problem even if the Kindle is in a leather cover.

It will probably be pressure or bending in their backpacks. Did those Kindles have rigid covers (they should, if carried in a backpack).

M. O'Malley says:
No they don't have rigid covers, but I think I'll order one for each of my daughters. Thanks for the suggestion. I still think this technology is too fragile! Good thing they love them so much!

@Evelyn: The Kindles have glass screens, not a version of plastic. I have carried mine in a backpack or rollon case all around the world in planes and ships and trains and cars with no problems. I treat them like a laptop, not like a smartphone - the larger screens do not flex. Our Kindles are in M-Edge Latitude covers.

Oh I have him (fud the dopey troll) on ignore. :-)

Mine is in a good case. This last time I was really being careful. .Madam Read a Lot seems to have forgiven me as long as I keep re-using her name. .Madam was on the seat next to me, no children anywhere near her. I've taught her to start yelling if anyone but me comes near her. (shut up Fud) So just figured it was a glitch. But electronics, especially computers, seem to die a lot around me. But I'm wondering, my case has a good magnet that keeps it closed. I wonder if that could trigger the problem? However, when I killed Madam #1 I KNOW what killed her. Accidently tossing her across the room so she did a smash and dive against the wall, well let's just say I was amazed it wasn't in tiny pices when I picked her up. Another thing.... I had just turned on the special offers. But surely that wouldn't have killed her.

It shouldn't...

That's nothing, I'm on my 4th. First one I had broke, so I got a replacement. Left the replacement on a plane, so purchased another one. That one broke, so I got another replacement.

I think I need to buy some back-ups...

Loz we need to start a club. We could call it, "who has lost/killed the most kindles" club. My Kindle 2 only had to be replaced once. A tiny crack in the corner caused that. And I dropped it more than once (while in the case). Granddaughter is now using it. Again, I don't know what happened to Madam but I'll say this... I know I don't want to be without my kindle for more than five minutes. I use it that much. I have it on the school bus with me (no, I'm not the driver, I'm the aide) so when we drop off the last kid the ear bud goes on and I have story time on the long ride back to our cars. Once in the car it gets plugged into the radio for more story time on the way home. Only time it doesn't get used a lot is inside the house. I'm on the road a lot more than in the house.

Lol! :)

Both times I had mine replaced were due to screen issues - I hadn't dropped them or damaged them in any way.

I'm the same - my kindle is with me constantly. I read on the way to work (about an hour), then at lunch (also an hour) and on the way home (yep, another hour!). Then I generally read for about half an hour or so right before I go to bed.

If this one goes bad, I may have to be sedated! :) Hence why I might have to purchase a back-up.

If I ever lost a kindle sedation may be the only way to go. I'm keeping my eyes open for another $99.00 sale at Target.

Freda, I expect Target is keeping their eyes open for you too!

Unfortunately our Target doesn't have Kindles on sale. We (Australians) can get a refurb kindle keyboard for $99 online through a Australian retailer. Might have to get that...

Prewitt warn me before being so funny... wiping off computer....

Loz, nothing wrong with a refurb. They probably work better than new ones. I say go for it.

Oh yeah, nothing wrong with them. Just gotta find the spare money! :)
