I have had several Kindles (first generation Kindle through last year's Kindle Touch) and a first generation Kindle Fire. I am only having this problem on my new Kindle Fire HD.

I have dozens of non-Kindle ebooks. I converted them to mobi format using Calibre and uploaded them to my Amazon Cloud drive. I then had no problem downloading them to my old Kindle Fire. Most of them appeared in the Docs directory of the Kindle Fire, but at least I could find them.

I am having a problem downloading them to my new Kindle Fire HD. When I set up my new Kindle Fire, the books all appeared in the Docs Cloud directory. When I downloaded them they all appeared in the Carousel and some appear in the Docs Devise directory, but most are not listed in either the Docs or Books Device directories. The same thing happened when I tried e-mailing the books to my Kindle Fire HD and uploading them directly from my PC using a USB cable.

The only way that I can find them on the Kindle Fire HD is to scroll back through the Carousel or to go to the Docs directory and do a name search of my Libraries.

I am having the same problem with mobi format books going into the docs directory. Hope the folks here at amazon prime can figure out the problem.

How do you have your meta data setup? Could be a problem with the Title/Author during the conversion.

David Guice says:
I'm getting my files direct from the publisher. And just to make things even more screwier than they are it's not all of the books only some of them. But if I know what to look for I would be happy to open some up in a text editor on my pc to check them out.

Whether they end up in the books tab or the docs tab depends on the metadata of the books upon conversion. Also, if you email them, they are going to show up in the Docs tab.

I think (can't remember exactly) that it is the PDOC tag. If you remove that and re-convert the mobi files, they will show up under the books tab.

Still, they should show up in one of those two tabs. Are you sure they aren't?

If you load them into Calibre you should be able to easily edit the metadata and transfer them via USB to your Kindle(at lead the e-reader version I haven't tried it on a Fire)

Neal, when doing the conversion on Calibre, do this:

Go to the Convert screen. Click on Mobi Output (second item from the bottom on my version). Go to "Personal Doc tab:" and change [PDOC] to [EBOK]. Perform the conversion. The converted book will show up under Books.

A weak Workaround.
Use the app. FILEEXPERT. Select the Mobi- file you want. Then in the menu; you have to scroll down. Choose (more) ( open as) (amazon kindle).
you have to do this each time.

Have you tried the Kindle Personal Document Service? When I buy ebooks from non-Amazon sources such as Baen, I have them sent directly from the seller to my free Kindle email address: [name]@free. kindle.com, but you can also send them from your PC using the Send To Kindle app.

Provided they don't have DRM, Amazon will even convert them from other formats to .azw for you if you put "convert" in the subject line. The benefit to doing it this way is that Amazon will archive these personal documents in your Kindle library and all of the whispersync functions will work with them. Per Amazon: "Whispersync automatically synchronizes your last page read, bookmarks, and annotations for personal documents that have been converted into Kindle format (with the exception of PDFs and files transferred via USB) across your supported Kindle devices and Kindle reading applications."

The process is fully explained here:

The books are being successfully loaded onto the Kindle Fire HD, but they only appear on the Carousel or if I do a name search in the entire Library. They do not appear in either the Docs Device or Books Device tabs.

On my old Kindle Fire, most of the books appeared in the Docs tab. I know that this could be corrected by reconverting all of the books in Calibre to change the pdoc tab, but it was never worth the effort since I knew where to find them.

I tried reconverting a couple of the books to change the pdoc tab and reloaded them on my Kindle Fire with the same result: they appear on the Carousel but not in the Docs or Books tabs.

I originally uploaded the books to my Cloud drive using the Personal Document Service. I have also tried e-mailing the books directly to my Kindle Fire HD.

Again, I had no trouble either directly uploading these same books to my old Kindle Fire or downloading them from my Cloud drive to my old Kindle Fire. Most of the books appeared under the Docs tab, but I know that has to do with the [pdoc] meta data tag.

This is only a glitch with my Kindle Fire HD. The books are on the device and appear on the Carousel. I can open them from the Carousel and read them. I can also find them doing a name search in the Library. But they do not appear under the Docs or Books tabs (or under any of the other tabs).

I tried deleting the books from my Kindle Fire HD and downloading them again from my Cloud drive. Once again, they appeared in the Carousel and could be opened and read but did not appear in either the Docs or the Books directories.

I then tried deleting the books from the device and uploading them directly from my PC using a USB cable (copying and pasting each .mobi file from my PC Calibre folder to the Kindle Fire Books folder). Same result.

I then deleted the books from the device, reformated them in Calibre to change the [PDOC] tag to [EBOK] and tried to upload them using Calibre. Calibre would not recognize my Kindle Fire HD as a connected device (I never had this problem with either my first generation Kindle Fire or any of my Kindles).

I then tried using the Calibre "Save to disk" function to save the books to the Books folder on my Kindle Fire. This time the books did not appear in the Carousel or in the Books or Docs tabs. I opened the Books folder on the Kindle Fire and saw that Calibre had created subfolders in the Books folder using the author names.

I then moved the .mobi files from each of the subfolders to the Book folder directory and deleted all of the subfolders. Finally, nearly all (but not all) of the books appeared both in the Carousel and under the Books tab. I deleted the rest from the device and gave up.

Calibre just released a new version, 0.8.70 to allow fire HDs to be recognized. This only works with Calibre installations running under WindowsVista or 7 or Linux. If you are running XP like I am, you are out of luck.

Anyone else experiencing a glitch where once you loaded mobi, epub books, when you try to read them and tap on the ebook to pop up the menu, it crashes back to carousel?

In reply to an earlier post on Oct 1, 2012 7:08:35 PM PDT
Eldian,
Yes, I'm having exactly the same problem. It also forgets where you've read to, so it's very frustrating.

I honestly think the fire hd is either full of bugs or full of bugs on purpose, because I mentioned to the amazon customer support about this and specified to them that I got a book for free and the support rep told me to buy it online!?

I hope Amazon can fix this bug on Kindle Fire HD. My old Kindle Fire had no problem with this. Now I cannot find uploaded mobi books, or word doc through "sent to Kindle" in the KFHD. They just disappeared. There is no need to be so exclusive, we all love kindle anyway. Please make it more user friendly.

I just bought a book and then stupidly erased the next moment. Now I can't find it anywhere on the kindle fire/cloud and when I try to re-buy the book, amazon tells me that I've already purchased the book and won't let me go further. What do I do???

I'm having the same problem. All of my personal documents are showing up in the Carousel but not under the Docs or Books tab. Once they are removed from the Carousel they can only be found by doing a search.

@kabcon & L. Peck

You can find your books on your "Manage Your Kindle" page here:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/digital/fiona/manage?ie=UTF8&ref_=kinw_ya_mf_1&#All

then you can resend it to the device of your choice. This also works for personal docs if you have Personal Document Archiving set up.

I had the same problem, figured out how to get the books to show up by using Calibre, but now all the cover pictures have disappeared! They are there when I load the books on but vanish if the kindle is turn off; the books are still there but has a plain grey cover with the kindle kid picture. Why is it doing this and how do I stop it? Does nobody from Amazon read these posts and think a reply may be helpful?

I have found the same thing to be true on my KFHD (personal docs emailed to my KFHD show up in the carousel, but not under DOCS or BOOKS) - it's very frustrating to say the least. I guess until they fix it we'll just have to consider it a 'feature' (you know, as a way to 'hide' those books on your Kindle that you don't want others to find - such as 'Fifty Shades of Grey', or 'STD's for Dummies', etc...)

I am having issues with the Kindle Fire HD loading my books. Some of the books once on the kindle don't have a cover.

>>>>"Why is it doing this and how do I stop it?"<<<<

I think that many books have their cover art in a separate file that must be loaded onto the Fire along with the book itself. When connected to the internet, the Fire can find the cover (various sources have book metadata that the Fire can access) and display it for you. When off, the Fire cannot find the cover since the file containing the cover is not in the Fire itself. Speculation on my part, but that is what appears to me to be happening.

Rarely, Mrs. Holloway. This is a customer forum that is only visited by Amazon officials on occasion. The closest thing we have are "Forum Pros" which are just customers, like you and me, that were selected by Amazon to help out on these fora. But they are not Amazon officials.

You CAN contact Amazon directly if you wish by selecting the "help" menu item at the top of this page and then the orange "Contact Us" button on the right side of the page that pops up. Follow the prompts from there.

Yes, Mrs. Holloway, send your thoughts to Amazon at kindle-feedback@amazon.com if you want to be sure that they see your feedback.
