I'm not sure I understand your question? I believe it depends on the book, how it is constructed. I'm recalling that at least in some books, I can enlarge the image by tapping on it. But in others, I can't.

M. Ratcheson - thanks for the attempt. I have a Kindle keyboard. Even when maps (or other non-text items) are expandable, the resolution is so poor that they are not readable. I am just curious if leaving e-ink and going to a higher res backlit screen (i.e. Fire) will remedy this problem.

they told me they are still testing.....and the charger is included ....

I was going by what one of the Kindle Pros had said in answer to the GPS question posed way back in the thread. After doing some preliminary research, it appears that the info I saw is wrong. The Fire DOES NOT have a GPS or Magnetomitor at this time. Perhaps it will be included in a later software update. Sorry for the confusion.

Yes they do.

If peeps want the audio you either buy the audio book
from amazon/audible or buy the book and pay an extra $3.99 for the audio on the new Fire.

Too much negativity in this thread - geez people, if you don't like what the new kindle's have to offer, DON'T BUY IT!!!

Great pricing for what it has to offer, it may not have what you want and that's fine - go buy what you want, but leave the rest of us alone.

Just add epub support and you'll have the best ereader on the market by far, and I'll sure buy one from day one.

So I drop $200 or more on a new kindle Fire HD and one of its "features" is advertisements on the homescreen AND as a screensaver? No thank you Amazon. Let me know when this feature is removed and you may have my money.

I hate touchscreens. Every time I have to use one I hate them more. I want a Kindle paperwhite with the light that is otherwise identical to the Kindle 3. The page turn buttons are about as good as you can get for the job and having the keyboard is the only simple way of creating notes and such. I am terribly afraid that the Apple effect will cause Amazon to kill the keyboard (or relegate it to static old technology) and try to force us into something that just isn't good for reading.

No text-to-speech feature mentioned at all. I have multiple sclerosis and really rely on text-to-speech. Not interested if not included

That is for Skype, but what about taking pictures?

My thoughts exactly! If I spend good money on a new tablet, I dont want ads shoved down my throat. Id rather spend a little more elsewhere.

M. Ratcheson says:
I just pulled down A Dance with Dragons: A Song of Ice and Fire: Book Five to my Fire and to my Kindle Keyboard, and took a look at the maps at the beginning of the book. At least to my eyes, the enlarged images are much more legible on the Fire than they are on my Kindle Keyboard. And the new Kindle Fire HDs' screen resolution is higher than what I have.

OTOH, I find reading text for a sustained period of time on the backlit screen bothers my eyes, so I usually use an eInk Kindle for serious reading. So if you get a Fire, you might want to hold onto your KK until you determine which works best for you.

There is no still camera on the Fire HD...only the camera for Skype.

Darn tootin', Sammy! I read the first page, needed to take an Upper with all the groaning, skipped to page 45 and peeps are still belly achin'. I've spent most of the morning, figuring out WHICH models I'm buying and HOW many...no complaints on my part!

It does not have text to speech. i wrote and left feedback and also called they told me to have people fill out the "leave feedback" form under contact to tell them the features that we want otherwise if there isnt enough people they will not put it in the next generations.

what would happen if you got one sent to a 'friend' in the US and got them to post it over seas to you? my guess is nothing. a number of years ago I did this with a pokemon card reader for my son, because nintendo wouldn't sell them in the UK. I'm getting my large screen fire shipped like this as I type. but why can't they just eccept that people want these devices and sell them to us where ever we live?

Ordered the 4G model and can't wait for my early X-mas present. Ads on the screen saver don't bother me so not sure why all the huff. I hope to get a $100-$125 on my Kindle fire and had previous luck in selling the prior versions. If not I will regift 8^)

I like the idea of constant connectivity and a $50 annual data plan sealed the deal for me.

In reply to an earlier post on Sep 7, 2012 3:56:00 PM PDT
@R.L. Hadden: There is a trade-in facility at http://www.amazon.com/s/?i=electronics-tradein&field-keywords=kindle, but you probably get more if you sold it yourself.

Does the Paperwhite and the HD have text to speech. I am leagally blind. Do audio books work and down load?
