I am deciding which Kindle Fire to buy, but with all it does and also saving to the cloud I don't understand how much memory I need on my tablet. Who can help this helpless newbie?

Depends on how much room you think you'll want for stuff (like movies) when you can't access the cloud.

Davek - If you can afford it, go for the larger amount of storage. No one ever complains about too much storage and you can't increase it at a later date. You need it to store anything you download - books to read, music, videos (very large files), Audible books (also large files) and apps.

It really depends on how you're going to use it. Are you going to use it primarily at home or near a wi-fi connection? Then you may not need a lot of internal storage. You can stream music and videos from the Cloud. However, if you will be traveling with it and need to carry a lot of content, you'll need more storage.

Korlithiel says:
The more storage capacity means a greater number of files you can store offline, and so is generally more useful for those who want to continue to watch videos when away from a wi-fi hotspot (as music, apps, and games, and ebooks tend to be small enough for most people to fit them nicely on the smaller capacity).

Offline videos means generally owning them, so if you don't purchase many from Amazon then it further limits the value of more storage.

Apps, music, movies, audio books. It's nice to have a bunch downloaded onto your tablet.

Ya can't have too much storage. If you want to run with the big dogs you need lots of memory.

Thank you all for your help. Being the newbie that I am and not expecting to have a large amount of movies needed on the device I think I will go for the 16gb fire HD. I appreciate the great resource you all are. Good luck to all of you with you Kindle Fire experiences.

I have the 16gb Fire HD and I wish I'd spent the extra money and gotten 32 gig. I can't tell you how many times I've wanted to download another video and didn't have room. Videos are very large and 16 gig only gives you room for a few.

Something to consider is that a Fire HD uses about 3.5 gig for Android so you only really have the balance left to use. That's about 12.5 gig on the 16 gig model and 28 gig on the 32 gig model, so the difference is greater than it seems.

You do have a great point Barry. I would normally be thinking more is better for sure. However this device is for my wife and she says she will download a movie watch it and send it right to the cloud. We do very little traveling so the need for many movies when wifi is not available it not very likely. Especially when we both have over 1,000 books each on our 3g kindle readers. Reading would be our safety net if we needed it. Thanks for the valuable perspective.
