I registered & started using my kindle yesterday. Today the screen froze during a software update. After 2 hours I decided to hold the button for 20+ seconds and there was no response. Any suggestions before I return it.

Press and hold the power button for a full 30 seconds. Time it. Set it down, and wait. It should reboot.

Post back.

I would try to reset the whole kindle completely and to do a factory reset on it. And then to try and register it again and to see if it freezes up again. You will have to de-register the kindle before you have to factory reset it. Also I had the same problem this afternoon as I was updating the new software update for the Kindle Paperwhite. It froze but I did the holding of the button and releasing it after 20-30 seconds. Then when it reloaded again, then I was happy it worked just fine.

If that doesn't work, I would call Kindle Support through Amazon's Customer Service and to see if they can send you a new Kindle. Good luck.

Be SURE to plug it in to a power source THEN press the Power button for 20+ secs. The orange CHARGE light should come on - then when the charge light is Green (full charge - after 4 Hours) press the Power button again for 20 secs and hit again - it should fire up :)

Rogue says:
When doing a hard reboot, you should "unplug" your charger first, then hold the power button. It will not properly shutdown if the charger is still connected. Also after the time has elapsed, you only need to press the button briefly to restart your device, not hold it for an additional 20 seconds.

Worked for me, thank you :)

Mine froze today during an update. I tried the 'unplug charger, hold for 30 seconds' and it worked for me. Thank you!

Mine froze last night while reading. After reading these posts, I pressed and held the power button for 40 seconds and waited a couple of minutes. Opened up the cover and it works again! Thank you!!

Are you getting a Green light when it's charged?

In reply to an earlier post on Jul 1, 2013 11:27:25 AM PDT

"No, its only yellow."

Then it's not charged... What are you using to charge it? and what cable are you using? You might try using a different charger and a different cable.

I charged it with the original usb cable connected to my computer. I charged it for more than 10 hours and I can still not reboot it.

The advice here worked but. am sure that I had to hold the button down for over a minute before the device gave any signs that it was rebooting.

This problem has just occurred with my kindle white. Tried all the button push but still not corrected.. However I pluged it into my computer using the USB cable. Suddenly it came up with a message... Disconnect from computer and reboot..... Did this and hey presto it worked. It started up and I got back to reading all my books again. It's worth trying before sending it back to the shop,,,, best of luck

My Kindle Paperwhite froze last night so recharged overnight and light showing green. Took advice on here and held start button for nearly one minute. It has now rebooted and is working fine. Thank you for suggestions. Hopefully I do not have to re-register.

This screen freezing and need for rebooting is happening so often I am thinking that Amazon have a bum product on their hands that they don't know how to handle

Received my Kindle Paperwhite today. I was so excited. I set it all up, connected to Wi-Fi, no problems, and began to read about the Kindle when it just froze. I tried to unfreeze it with no luck. I came to this site and went to other sites to troubleshoot. I unplugged the charger and held the button down for 20 seconds. No luck. I plugged the charger in and held the button down for 20 seconds. Still no luck. I held the button down while I watched tv. Again, no luck. I tried and tried and tried everything all to no avail. I called Amazon and they took me through the same things I had been doing myself for an hour. Now I have to wait 10 days until Amazon can send me a new Kindle. So far, NOT impressed with this device that I was so looking forward to owning.

Unfortunately you must have received a lemon. Even if you must wait another 10 days for a replacement,
you will be well pleased with a working one. It took me sometime to get use to the brighter screen but now I very seldom use the light. One thing to watch, depending where you live, is how sensitive the touch feature is. I live in the tropics and even with window screens, mossies, moths and other flying nuisances get in. If a fly or moth lands on my screen, the pages jump all over. LOL.
