My son bought himself a kindle fire hd over the summer and we are having some issues with the battery life. It seems to be running down quicker than it should be. Does he need to shut the kindle completely down when finished using it? Or are their other things on the kindle I can change to help?

How much battery life is he getting out of each charge?

One way to save battery life is to make sure wi-fi is turned off when not in use.

First you need to tell us how long the battery is lasting.

I am having the same problem, The battery is only lasting maybe 1 hour with no warning about the battery being low, the display is not low and doesn't tell me when there is 20% or anything. Is my kindle bad?

I'm seeing the Kindle discharge its battery when switched "off" - left it unplugged and unused yesterday from a full charge and it was < 5% (red battery) last night. Is that what others are seeing? Anyone got a solution?

I just got my Kindle Fire HD - returned my Kindle Fire due to power issues (they no longer had the original model.) Battery seems to be a continuing theme. I would appreciate it if someone could answer some questions, so I at least I know I am giving the best effort. I just received the Fast Charge today.

It is my understanding that the battery will not charge if you are using the unit.
1. Should the unit be turned off or asleep?
2. If you use the unit while it is plug in to charge, will it hurt anything?
3. If you get the message at 15% to plug it in and while plugged in you continue to use it, will it continue to drain the battery or allow it to stay neutral (not gaining, but not draining)?
4. Will it make a difference in how quickly it charges if the Fast Charge is plugged into an extension cord, as opposed to directly into the wall.
5. Since there were issues with the original Kindle Fire not always charging, even though it is plugged in, what do you suggest as the best way to know that the HD is changing, since there is not external light!

I love the Kindle Fire - I hate the charging issues. I have a lot of down time and therefore, I use mine a lot!! I now find myself worrying about conserving my charge rather than enjoying the unit, so I am very hopeful that the Fast Charge (and your replies) will be the answer!!

I got the Fast Charge and it really does make a difference!

It will charge while your using it but I'm also having battery issues. It will go from a full charge of 100% to 10% in 4.5 hours, if I had known it only lasted that long I would have just invested in an 8 cell battery for my laptop. I've only had it about 2 months and between the constant crashes and battery issues I'm not happy with it.

I have the same problem, the battery runs down when powered off...useless really, especially when so slow to charge with USB cable

I'm having the same problem and is the reason I'm trying to find a solution.

I've learned that when switching off, you need to keep button depressed until option of closing down appears...maybe an "official" amazon kindle case with magnetic catch and auto shut off would also solve problem. Meanwhile I've just bought a paperwhite kindle as its much lighter and I'm fed up losing hours to addictive mindless games when I'd rather be reading. I'll keep the Fire for movies on holiday...Elizabeth (aka gadget girl)

I am having the issue where it's fully charged and after I use it for a while it is still with a good amount of battery left. Yet when I put it in sleep mode it's dead in a few hours. What is going on with that?

Same issue here but it only recently started - maybe this last week. I have had the fire hd since mid December. At first it held a charge more like the kindle 1. Would love to know what changed/what is wrong.

Returned this hd with a bad battery - only got 2-3 hours out of it using every trick I could find. Received new one and now get 8 plus hours of use. Used GSam battery monitor on both to verify numbers. I am happy - thank you Amazon!

Get the free app Android Assistant and you can see what may be draining your battery. I had a problem with my Fire HD and used AA and another great app called Battery HD to find out that my Audiobook app was turning itself on unbidden and dragging my battery down in no time.

Battery HD is a great tool for managing your battery. You can even set it to announce vocally when the charge level you set has been reached, both for discharge and recharge. You can also set it to be quiet at night so it doesn't wake you up speaking to you about your battery.

Hope this helps.

Why am I reading this information after I've used my Fire HD for over 3 weeks??? This valuable information should be in a "quick start" paper with delivery of the unit. I wish I had known.

i have the amazon cover w/ magnetic closure and am having the same issue. it drained to 11% in a bit over 24 hours of sitting on the table totally asleep. last weekend i used the device until the battery was down to about 10%, powered down completely (ie. turned it *off* -- which required two attempts; the first time i tapped 'yes' to power down, it just went into sleep mode), then connected it to its quick-charge adapter for about six hours. it improved, but did not fix, the problem. i am about to go looking for Android Assistant to see if i can diagnose the suck.

ETA I tried again last night to power off and charge overnight. I didn't get to check it until after work -- once again it actually had NOT powered down. When I turned it off last night, a dialog box popped up asking if I really truly wanted to turn my Kindle Fire HD OFF. I clicked 'yes', and it appeared to power down. I even tested it before turning in. I opened its magnetic cover. It was still 'off'. But when I got home from work, I flipped the cover open expecting to have to turn it on with the button & watch it boot, but: nope. It woke right up. w. t. f. Maybe it's never really 'sleeping', either.

Time for a firmware update, maybe...?

I got my kindle as gift. I was looking for the manual and it didn't tell me how long it should charge. I assumed I could use it as soon as it gets full.

@I love: You can charge it for as long as you like after the first time. You can use it as soon as it gets fully charged - I've even used it part charged with no problems.

We don't know why it is not in the user guide - no one here wrote it, and we are not from Amazon. And there is no need to yell at us.

I have the kindle fire hd and was told by the salesman that it only had 4 he battery life due to the Wi-Fi and hd usage. I have no problems as long as I charge while shutdown and shutdown when not using.

I am having the same issues. I returned my first Kindle Fire HD, and the second seems to be doing the same. I did controlled time usage and it is the same issue. I Turn the power off completely. It becomes
a real pain if you have to turn your WIFI on and off. This kind of situation sort voids the use of a WIFI.
