Go to the appstore, get an app called Go Launcher Ex. Install, and hold down the home key, choose Go Launcher as default. Bam!

Say thank you to the nice librarian ;-)

"Thank you to the nice librarian"

I don't have a Fire, but my husband is a librarian...I have to represent!

You've just made a lot of people very happy.

Thank you, nice librarian.

What are we left with if this gets rid of the carousel?

Android.

Well at least a closer to stock version of android. Check out the pictures on the app page to get the idea.

But does it still leave all the stuff on the screen just not in carousel mode?

Kujako says:
No. It will completely replace the bookshelf motif interface with one closer to the stock Android UI.

Which is nice if you want to use the Fire as an Android tablet, but I want to use it only as a media consumption device. So I'm going back to holding my breath and until they fix the carousel.

Then I'll pass. I want basically the archive situation like the eink kindles. Not all books show up unless I d/l it. Same with apps showing only installed items.

I really hate to say this as I know I am going to get slammed, but I LOVE the carousel Finally I can see all the covers of my books. A title rarely triggered a memory of why I purchased a book, but the cover does. My 700 plus books are floating happily around the carousel! Love, love, love it. For all of you that hate it, I really am sorry at this time there is no way to change it to the way you want it to be.

I think someone has to try it out and report back how it works.
Can we switch back and forth between the screen provided under this app and the stock one Amz gave us?

I don't have a problem with the carousel so am not going to open the app. Hopefully it is a good interim solution for the many it bothers.

Before I try this solution, I'd love to hear from someone who's tried this.

yes you can switch back and forth. You'll just have to reset the application permissions in settings.

Everytime you try to do anything it will ask you if you want to use Go Launcher or the standard Fire launcher. But it gets old very fast having to tell it which to use. You can set a default option though that it will use without asking. Personally I didn't care for it and uninstalled it.

This is a typical scenario for most android based tablets. If you have more than one app which performs essentially the same function, unless you set one as the default, it will always ask you which app you wish to use to launch an event.

Elizabeth says:
If you hold down the home icon it will ask which to use and let you select one as default

I'm sorry - I obviously wasn't very clear. :)

When I install Go Launcher Ex it changes my "desktop" to an android looking desktop. It will open an application fine but when I exit the app using the 'home' button, it asks if it should use 'Go Launcher Ex' or 'Launcher', and has a checkbox to set a default use.

I also don't see a directory with my books or any way to access the internet. Perhaps with more use I would get used to it and find how to accomplish things that aren't immediatly apparent to me.

Have go launcher on my phone and love it. The default fire home screen is pretty but the carousel is garbage (ridiculous how hard it is to get it to select the right book/app/etc), and takes up way too much real estate. the size of favs vs. carousel should be reversed - make the carousel small and favs bigger. I'll be switching to go launcher as soon as i get home - thanks for the tip!
and on a related topic ... why are there so few customizable options on the fire? customizability is one of the big draws of android, but amazon took it all away. i'd love to cusomize the pictures for the launch screen but there is no option ... and that's just one example.
so far the fire is not doing it as an ipad alternative.

I also like it.
Of course it would be more fun if I had our collections back, but I am pretty sure that Amazon will come up with an update to correct that.
