HJ Leonard says:
It's very sensitive. Just takes light pressure. When I used too much pressure or held it too long it did a reset. Once I realized the problem, it stopped because I changed what I was doing.

Don't know if that helps any.

I have also been having problems. I not have this problem with the original fire. Can sensitivity of the button be changed via a setting?

Can you feel a click on the on/off button on your 8.9's? My KF 7 HD has a noticeable click when turning on/off but my 8.9 does not. I called support and asked them if that is the way it is suppose to be. The lady didn't know so they are replacing it with a new one.

I find the on/off button on the HD Fire a serious PIA. The on/off button on my original Fire was/is excellent.
There is a designer out there that needs remedial human factors training. Shame on them and the people who approved the design. I have a Nook HD+ and the on/off button is, in my opinion, the only thing that is better on it than the one on the Fire HD 8.9".

I find it a bit strange where the manufacturers of these small devices hide the function switches. Each of the many devices I have I've had to get out a paint pen and high lite the switch locations.

Subsequent to this post I have replaced my Kindle Fire HD 8.9 and that resolved the 'difficult button' problem. It still is not a joy to use but it now works without difficulty. As usual I found Amazon very prompt and responsive to my complaints.

There were many complaints about the location and the design of the power button on the 1st generation Fire.

Amazon changed it.

I fine I keep turning up or down my volume when I am trying to turn it off, just takes time to get used to the placement of the button. Love my Fire, and now I get to explore the world of magazines on it, yippee less crap coming in the mail ;-)

I have the same issue with my Fire 8.9--no click when it is depressed, and difficult to get it pressed. It does have a click when it is released. Has anyone figured out if this is normal or should I exchange my device?

In reply to an earlier post on Nov 29, 2012 4:25:33 AM PST
RR, I sent the one that didn't click back. The replacement clicks on and off, so I don't think it is normal that yours doesn't click.

I seem to be having the same problem with the power button on my kindle fire 8.9. It's very difficult to push on/off and hardly makes a click sound.

Is the power button supposed to feel like the volume buttons? Because the volume buttons seem perfectly fine.

Rodster says:
Add me to those with a power button issue. I also don't feel a click with the power button when it's depressed, only when it's released. The volume buttons feel great but not with the power button.

I also have the 7" HD and all of the buttons work like they are supposed to.

EDIT: I just noticed that the volume button closest to the power button feels the same. You can press the button and it's not until you release it that you feel a click.

I did exchange mine due to the power button issue, and like the other person above, the power button on the new one I received behaves normally, with regular clicking and no difficulties. So, it's a defect and you should get a replacement. It's very annoying and I am glad it was not just a design issue.

I am also having issues with my KD HD 8.9 power button. I press it to turn the device on and the Kindle Fire flashes on the screen then goes away and the machine doesn't go on. I hold it to reset it and it does the above again & again. After a few times I feel the click and thats when it stays on. My battery doesn't seem to be charging while connected to the computer either. Even if the unit is shut completely down it won't charge. I had to order the rapid fire charger since all the stores are sold out. Anyone else have similar issues? I called support and will have a new one in two days.

Most probably your Tablet is slightly charging while connected to your PC but very little and not very well. The 500ma from a USB connector is insufficient to do the job. You need a 1.8 to a 2 ampere charger to do the job. There is one sold as being specifically for the Kindle Fire HD's for 20 dollars. Others in that amperage class are available for less

Looks like I will be sending mine back as well. The power button does not work and there is no way to turn the device on, even if it is fully charged. However, it will power up and turn on when it is plugged in. Seems like this is a big issue for many based on what I have read here and elsewhere.

Just FYI, the Fire charger is 9 watts and others are usually 5 or less.

I sent mine back for a power button defect as well.

I use the official Amazon case, which turns it on and off automatically so there's no issue. But I certainly wouldn't buy a $50 case to solve a flaky on/off switch; it's just an added convenience on the case I was buying anyway.

@Willow: On my Fire HD, the power switch is at the top.

K. Smith says:
I have the EXACT same issue with the one I bought last night. The power button makes no click, and the down button on the volume rocker (the side closest to the power button) doesn't click either. I would've assumed it was poor design if it hadn't been for the up volume side, which works quite well. Exchanging...

I am on my third Kindle Fire HD and have had a problem with the power button on all three. I am tired of setting up new machines. I worry about three months or so down the road being able to even use my Kindle. Other than the power button I love it and do not want to give it up. I just feel that when I invest over $300 in something, the power button should not be a problem - especially on three different machines.

My 8.9 power button stopped working, of course so did the kindle! I am ticked off, 300 and its warranty just ran out.
