I suppose just creating another folder and resending the books that were on my Kindle to it will make it ok, right? I feel sick to my stomach right now :(

If the folder you deleted is still in the trash can, open trash and right click the document folder and choose "Restore". It should go back to where you deleted it from on your Kindle. Otherwise , yes just create another Document folder and put it in your kindle. Or you could use the option "Restore to factory condition" from the kindle's menu. If you do that you will have to redownload your books from Amazon and possibly reregister. Don't worry you can't really do permanent damage though it would be a pain if you had to redownload a few hundred books.

Ok, everything is back to normal! Whew, close call. Cynthia, since the computer treats the Kindle as a separate drive, I would not be able to restore, and I definitely do not want to ever consider a factory reset.

Anyway, I created another 'documents' folder, and sent my books back to it. Thank God for calibre and my detailed tagging, I know exactly what books were on my Kindle. I only had to redownload my games from my Amazon account. And the dictionary remained, which I was most worried about, truth be told.

Note to self: DO NOT MULTI-TASK WHILE DELETING STUFF ON THE KINDLE!!!!!

This should also be a reminder to backup and test the restore of your Kindle -- and your PC.

Other than backups, before doing any serious file management, I create a backup of the directory that I will be working on before I do any deletions.

That was my first thought after it happened! I did a back-up of my Kindle one time (eons ago), and I meant to do it regularly but ... Anyway, I just did a back-up, and will try to continue. Maybe this experience will scare me into remembering :)

On another note, I noticed that I have subfolders (author names) in my 'documents' folder, with the books in them, where as before all my books went directly into the 'documents' folder - is that because I'm sending my books to the device from Calibre? (I was trying to delete one the empty subfolders when I accidentally deleted the 'documents' folder)

ShirleyKat says:
Kindle ignores subfolders in the documents folder. Some people move a folder of books into the Kindle's documents folder and its content appears on the Kindle home pages, but the folder they were in has no effect on anything the Kindle shows.

You can aways restore to factory defaults if all else fail.

Hi ShirleyKat, I'm aware of that; I was curious as to whether the subfolders were caused by my use of Calibre as this is not part of the Kindle's normal behavior (not to my knowledge, anyway).

Yasmin, we're you able to restore your notes and highlights as well (MBP files)? How about the last page read of currently 'open' books?

In reply to an earlier post on Jan 9, 2011 6:00:42 PM PST
Yasmin S says:
I wasn't able to 'restore' anything but had to put all my documents back on Kindle, from scratch. I lost my notes and my LPRs; fortunately, my Kindle is a replacement I got about a month ago so I didn't have many notes.

Regarding LPRs, I'm doing a reading challenge presently and I've been taking note of my progress (as in percentage of the book read) on the books I'm currently reading so it will be easy enough to get to the last page read on all my open books.

Maybe you'll still see your notes at http://kindle.amazon.com?

Hiya....i just deleted the music folder!!!! i cannot find the trash can on the kindle. pls help :(

In reply to an earlier post on Aug 29, 2011 9:35:20 AM PDT
Hi Samira

There is no "trash can" on your Kindle. If you deleted the music folder it and everything you put in it is now deleted, it is gone forever. You can make a new "music" folder, and transfer songs back into it though.

Samira, you might want to contact Kindle Customer service.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html/ref=hp_left_cn?ie=UTF8&nodeId=200212360

They may have to talk you through a "factory reset"

Try hooking the Kindle up to your computer, and create a new folder called Music on the Kindle using Windows Explorer. (assuming you're using a windows computer)

Clueless American here wondering what would you be charged 22 pounds for? Just for discussing with Amazon Kindle CS? Or you talked to them and they offered you a refurbished unit? Or what?
