This is an apology for the way we previously handled illegally sold copies of 1984 and other novels on Kindle. Our "solution" to the problem was stupid, thoughtless, and painfully out of line with our principles. It is wholly self-inflicted, and we deserve the criticism we've received. We will use the scar tissue from this painful mistake to help make better decisions going forward, ones that match our mission.

Now, it will be interesting to see how Amazon handles future (possible) illegal downloads and potential license holder's lawsuits -- maybe a more extended time before posting to search out ownership?

If I unwittingly purchase an illegal copy of an ebook, I see no problem with Amazon deleting it from my Kindle as long as I get a straightforward explanation and an immediate refund. I have no desire to own stolen merchandise.

A lot of people seem to think an apology was necessary. I don't, but thanks anyway. Good for you.

While it might have been handled better I think you did the right thing for an immediate fix. I'm glad you are thinking of new ways to fix this in the future to keep the privacy hungry part of the public happy and show that you aren't the "draconic" company they keep thinking you are. I have always thought Amazon has done a pretty good job of keeping things fair and right. And I'm very impressed that you have come out with an apology where many CEOs of companies would normally just tell the nay sayers where to go if anything at all. Thank you and keep up the good work and my respect will keep growing.
