Will magnets harm my Kindle?

I have a Miche handbag. It has magnets on the basic bag plus magnets on the cover for the bag. That a total of 16 magnets. Is it ok to put my Kindle in the bag without harming it?

I think you are generally going to be safe, as it would take a pretty strong magnet to cause damage. To be certain, I would contact Kindle support and ask.

Edit: Just did a quick search. Magnets won't harm flash memory, which is what the Kindle uses. You should be safe.

You should be fine. I had a cover for my Kindle that had a magnetic closure and it never affected the Kindle's performance.

My purse (also known as the kindle travel compartment) has a very powerful magnetic closure (seriously Tignanello the magnet is borderline dangerous!) and it's never hurt y kindle, also I think some of the m-edge covers have magnetic closures (my red cover for k2 did) and they never did any damage. You should be a-ok!!

Thank you for searching! I couldn't find where to ask or search at Kindle support. I tried a Nookcolor, before I traded it in on a Kindle, it had magnet closure on the box it came in. Couln't find anything in Kindle Users Manual about magnets. Just wanted to make sure I can put it in my Miche bag. Thanks again!!

Tegan says:
I wouldn't put it near an industrial strength magnet, as that would damage *other* components in the Kindle. But none of the clasps on your purse are going to be anywhere near powerful enough to do damage.

I'm glad someone asked about Miche bags. I've been oogling them since they came out. A friend actually gifted me the really big one and a couple of shells, but it's really too big for me for every day use. Does anyone have a Miche bag (the regular size one) and does your K3 with lighted cover fit in there? I believe I tried at a show with my k2 in a M-edge with light and it didn't quite fit... so... maybe. I'm holding off on purchasing because my Kindle in my purse is a must.

Absolutely not. In fact, magnets will cure your Kindle's rheumatism.

Bridget Ruth says:
The only thing I've read about that is that the Neodynium (I think that's what they're called) earth magnets might damage the screen. But those are pretty rare in a non-industrial setting and ridiculously strong, if they were in a purse closure it would be difficult to open . . .

I have the lighted cover & it fits in my regular size Miche bag if I don't have a bunch of STUFF in my bag. You can get a checkbook in with Kindle. I keep my credit card case in the zipper part and drivers license in large pocket. Phone is in small pocket. So there is not much in the main bag section.

Thanks, Debbie... I found out Merle Norman sells them so I might check that out. I usually carry a wallet, kindle, epi pen, glasses case and a writing pen so not a whole lot. Hmmmmm... might not work. Yes, this is what I base buying purses on! Thanks so much for the feedback!

This is excellent information. Thanks for asking the question. I read an article about kids using Kindles in a public school that implied cell phones can occasionally mess up Kindles. Anyone have info about that?

**Meya** says:
I've never read or heard anything about cell phones messing up a Kindle. My K2i has been in my purse many times right next to my cell phone, and at night my cell phone is near my DXG on my nightstand.

I've never had an issue either, but I find myself a touch paranoid when I want to put my kindle in the same bag as my phone. Most likely, "damaged kindles" were the result of careless students...

Tegan says:
My guess is that a cell phone banging against an unprotected Kindle screen could certainly mess it up. I wouldn't put anything else in a purse with a Kindle unless the Kindle had a solid cover for it.

Miche uses Earth magnets. Should be safe for all mag swipe cards and electronics. The only thing I myself wouldn't chance is the key finder brooches, but even those should be safe. I carry my KindleDX in the Miche big bag or half out of the classic all the time with no effects to worry over as yet.

TvdA says:
The K3 with a case might just fit sideways in the classic, but I don't think it will zip closed. I'll check with the dh's k3 for you when he comes home tonight. His is in the MEdge Lat cover, which is tight.

Yankee Fan says:
It will not harm your kindle. The memory on a kindle is solid state (like a flash drive or SD card). That type of memory is not harmed by magnets. Even current magnetic storage (like hard drives in a laptop) are less vulnerable than they were a few years ago.

Did you have any problems with your cell phone after using a Miche bag. I have the regular size bag and just concerned that it'll damage my phone.

In reply to an earlier post on Feb 10, 2012 6:02:52 AM PST
Nah, I think it takes a stronger magnet than the little ones they use. My kindle and cell phone lives in my Miche bag. Never a problem.

I've used a purse with a magnetic closure for a number of years. I've had various cell phones and kindles in a front pocket near that magnet and have never had an issue. Doesn't seem to bother my android phone at all. In fact, the body of the phone has enough metal in it that if I'm not careful, it gets stuck to the magnet. When that happens, I have to use both hands to get it free. It's a strong magnet. I used to worry about it, but it continues to function just fine. I also keep both my kindle and my phone in that front pocket and neither causes any harm to the other. I use the Amazon lighted cover on my KT, and have no problems putting it in my purse.

I have recently purchased magnetic matress cover having realy strong magnetic field. I am wondering whether this can cause any harm to my Kindle

Posted on Dec 7, 2012 11:49:59 PM PST
Only if you roll over on your Kindle while sleeping on the mattress cover will harm come to your Kindle.

Andro Vidjak says:
Thanks. So you think that if I continue reading holding Kindle on my knees while laying on the bed and not putting it on the mattress directly no harm will be done?

In reply to an earlier post on Dec 8, 2012 12:01:09 AM PST
Yes, I think that.
