However, books from Project Gutenberg and other free sources can be shared to any device that can read them.

You can share books from one to another as long as they are all on the same Amazon account. There can be any number of Kindles, PC or other approved readers on your account, BUT only 6 deices can have the same book at the same time.

I set up an account for my family so we can share the same books like we did with DTBs. I have three Kindles and one PC on there so far.

The only problem is that if you have a gift card, it is shared by anone that is on the account and buying a book. And you need to makde sure that you change the credit card information before you purchase a book. So it limits you to buying books on the Kindle. Unless you are like we are.......... we set a price we want to pay for a month on books. Because we share books we also share the price. We purchase a gift card at the beginning of the month and at the end of the month we see who spent the most.
Such as.... $50.00 card (never enough). I bought three books in the month for a total of 18.00. My daughter bought 4 books for 20.00 and my mom spent 12.00. That leaves a credit balance still at the begining of the next month. So I then need to pay 18.00, my daughter 20.00 and my mom 12.00. Then we buy another card for 50.00 again and split the difference. It isnt as difficult as it sounds.

Good luck with it.

I set up my account on my girlfriend's computer (Kindle for PC) so she could read one of my books. Seems to work fine, and I trust her not to run up my account. It's like this: If I lent her my Kindle I'd probably never see it again, and if I bought her a copy of the book it would take her at least a year to finish it, assuming she ever picks it up. :-)
