I would like to know how to turn on and off the voice reader.

One way is to hit the Aa key and choose Turn on Text to Speech. Then to reverse that, push it again to choose pause or stop. There is also a hot key to start and stop but I don't remember what it is. I think the space key is a pause key when it is reading to you. Anybody out there know the shortcut keys?

First, you need to have the book open. :)

My preference then is Shift+Sym. Shift is the up arrow. I think these were deliberately chosen because they are the two keys in the outer corners of the lowest row of the keyboard...easiest to find for the vision impaired.

spacebar=pause and resume
home=turn off TTS and go to home
Aa=change voices and speeds

If the book has the text-to-speech access blocked (currently, it would be from Random House or one of its imprints), it will tell you that you can't do it.

The volume control is on the right edge of the Kindle.

I have a kindle fire. I've seen several posts about the Text to Speech option is visible after tapping the Aa key. All I get is text size, space and margin options... there is no "Text to Speech". Do I have to download an app to make it functional? If so, what's the steps?

Posted on Dec 29, 2011 3:39:40 AM PST
That, Willie, is because the Fire does not yet have TTS. But, you brought up a valuable point. Not only does the book have to have TTS enabled but your Kindle device must do TTS. Actually specifying a model of Kindle seems at least unstylish or perhaps not permitted but maybe if I quick...the Kindle Basic, the Kindle Fire, and, I believe, the KindleDX don't do TTS.

Thanks Patrick. I would have thought TTS a basic function out of the box at this stage. Again, I appreciate the info.

Bufo Calvin says:
cece, which Kindle do you have? This thread was started more than four years ago, and the instructions I gave back then don't apply to all current models.

Could you also post a bit more about what you want to turn off?

I saw this thread yesterday and decided to play with the text to speech on my Kindles. I figured out everything on the Kindle Keyboard but need some help with my Kindle Fire Second Generation (the regular one...not the hd) I can turn the text to speech off and one but I haven't found the controls to switch from female to male voice or to change the speed of the reading voice. I'd appreciate any instructions on how to do this...

Did you follow the directions in the post just above this one? If so, what problems are you still having? No one here can help without having more information about what you've tried and what happened because of it.
