how do I restart my kindle

...or hold the power switch over to the right for a full 20 seconds (count slowly) and let go. Be patient and it will restart within a minute or so.

That procedure is a reboot. You should always do a restart first. If that doesn't clear up the problem on your kindle then do the reboot.

If the problem persists and they want to replace--what happens to the no keys skin I got for the keyboard--bought from Amazon to make the keys more legible and avoid possible fading of keys--
I've never heard anyone have trouble from the skin

At any rate-- I suspect that all this started with the new software for the notepad and page #s-- though I haven't heard of anyone else having this problem

Although I haven't encountered it, I mostly read blogs anymore and annotation is disabled for them. I did alot of highlighting when I got the Kindle 2 a year ago and it never stalled.

I wonder if the size of the My Clippings file has anything to do with it? You can remove the file (move it to your computer if you like) and still have the notes/underlines associated with each book or manuscript show on the Kindle -- they're saved in a .mbp file per document as well as appended to My Clippings.

A Kindle cover that doesn't attach to the ports on the side of the Kindle couldn't POSSIBLY cause any problems -- you got a new/inexperienced CS operator who was reading from a script about the defective 'hinged' Amazon cover, inappropriately. Also a skin can't have an effect on annotation.

Recommending a factory reset is (IMO) just something to distract you. If it were to work it would probably be because you would have an empty My Clippings file. You would also lose the notes you've made to your documents so far! If you decide to do a factory reset, save ALL the .mbp files from the Documents folder of the Kindle, your My Clippings file, and any non-Amazon files on your Kindle, off to your computer first.

For your question:
Soft restart (or reboot): Home/Menu/Settings/Menu/Restart wait for system to reload and homescreen to repopulate -- do this when you have any questionable behavior (such as a field from the browser stuck on the screen, or fast battery drain, or almost anything you can think of) that LEAVES THE BUTTONS ACTIVE. This is like restarting your PC from the Windows shut down menu -- orderly.

Hard restart (or reboot): Hold the power switch over 30 seconds, release and wait as above. Some Kindle Support pages say 15 seconds, but less than 30 is inconsistent in whether it works (as your experience with the 20 hold shows). Sometimes it will take an even longer hold, 45-60 seconds; I do not know why this is so. -- only do this if the Kindle is unresponsive (frozen) or if the soft restart hasn't worked. Because it's like shutting a computer down by simply pushing the power button: files don't get closed properly and you may have things like your place lost in books, etc.

Factory reset: Home/Menu/Settings/Menu/factory reset. Drastic for any kind of fix. It exists to zero out a Kindle to give it away or sell it. Removes all books and personal information, unregisters it, and puts the Welcome message back. I would only do this if the next step was to send it back for replacement anyway.

P.S. the notepad from 7 Dragons is active content (not firmware update), the same as games are, and I can't think of a way it could affect annotations. As far as the page# update, it could be true, except there has been no upswing in annotation problems noted on this forum since its release and there were already people with the same problem before it.
