unfortunately no - i've had courses that have used vitalsource and unfortunately, you need to have the program on your laptop in order to access the textbook. as a note, you are also only renting this textbook and it will expire after 180 days, so if you are like me and keep textbooks, it might not be a good option. you could check and see if amazon has the book available

Yes you can on kindle fire

Possibly. The vitalsource website says you can download the books and you don't have to read them online. What format do they download in? That is, what is the file type (like, epub, or html, or whatever)?

I finally figured it out. You have to go into device under settings and allow third party apps. Then go to the vital source website and download the app for the kindle fire. Hope this helps.

Everyone has done great bringing back such an old thread. Since i was looking for the same thing and actually figured it out i thought i would stop in and let everyone know. The answer i found is for the e ink Kindle (or any thing that reads a pdf file). On Joe Dunlin's blog ( he tells how to do it. You first need to install a pdf printer on your computer. Then adjust the margins for the pdf printer. Print to pdf, then transfer to your kindle.

I did all of that and can download the file but it won't open. Amazon won't help me because it is a 3rd party app and they don't support 3rd party apps. I bought this so I could use it for graduate school but if I can't download my textbooks it is useless to me. Edited to add: I spoke with support at VitalSource and their current app software is not compatible with KF HD (it is with the previous version of kindle) and they do not know when their software will be upgraded. The first amazon rep I chatted with was less than helpful but the second one was much better. I am sure they are being inundated with questions but it is very frustrating to not be able to use the device for the reason that you bought it.

I am having the exact same issue. i downloaded the app about 20 times with no results i finally was able to install it with the use of es file explorer app only to get a message saying my device is not compatible, such a waste of time! I was still hoping it would work somehow but i see from you post that my kindle has go to go back.

ook I figuredout a way I dont know if it will work with the kindle fire HD but it worked for mine.
1- go to the kindle fire vital source page from there
2- go to knowledge base / android support module
3- Click on bookshelf for android direct download
4-if you have es file explorer app it will be under downloads
5-click on bookshelf file and install (this one does open)
6-you will be prompted to put in you vital source account info
7-you should be able to see your books and start dowloading.I was
Hope this helps someone.

My plan is to email support at Vital Source and explain that them upgrading their software could be very beneficial. I am an online instructor as well and ebooks are half the cost of paper books. It makes financial sense to get ebooks at least from the students point of view.

I just returned my Kindle Fire for the Kindle Fire HD to use for my ebooks. I am disappointed that they are having this issue, but I am sure they will resolve it, it is just a matter of when. If in 30 days it is not resolved, I may sadly return this one as well.. I really need my books online, and I really wanted the HD. The HD is lighter, and has a larger memory. I guess we will see what happens! Maybe we all have to keep pestering the Vitalsource people!

i have had the same problem. vitalsource does not realize this yet, as their support has no idea. it will not work until vitalsource updates their software (notice the screenshots on their download guide do not look like the screensof the new fire). mine is not the hd but it is the new version 10.1.3...dont waste your time trying to download.

Is there a way to have a vitalsource book read to you?

Make sure that you Kindle Fire is set to allow third party app installation. Then go the and click on the download for Kindle Fire. Works great. Been using for about 2 months. Only works with Kindle Fire and Kindle Fire HD not the regular Kindle.
