I think I'd rephrase that to "ebooks that you purchase from Amazon can only be read on the Kindle." :-)

There are exceptions, I think. Ebooks from Baen books don't have DRM (at least the ones you buy directly from them).

Books that can be read on both the Kindle and the computer are *.txt, *.prc that are not locked, *.azw that are not locked, *.mobi that are not locked. *.pdf, *.doc and *.html can be sent to Amazon for conversion to *.azw. These can be read on the computer before conversion, I don't know if they can after or not. I am using a Mac and I use Stanza to read them on the computer. Basic rule, if they have DRM (they are locked) then I cannot read them on the computer. Just another reason for avoiding that type of document.

Well, maybe it's my occasional side trips into an alternate reality, but I first read your statement as saying that the only thing you could read on the Kindle were ebooks from Amazon. Maybe I got up too early this morning, heh.

I meant that to say that your answer was more complete than mine. Sometimes I don't hear what I say too good

Hi Stacey,
Yes, you can. I have bought 2 books since last night. Click on the book that you want to buy, it will then take you to a page that asks if you have a kindle to register if not it will tell you that you can register your pc. click on that to register you username and password that you use for your amazon account. It will tell you to download the program, which took less than a minute on my computer to do that. Then I was reading kindle books on my computer last night.

I think this might be a new thing that they just started because I hadn't seen it before. But you can read the kindle books on your computer now. It will be really easy for you to. I don't think I left anything out, but it will walk you through the whole process.

I hope this helped,

I think you guys are all giving the techy answer to OP's question, and it is certainly not true that Amazon books can only be read on the Kindle.

My answer to her is Yes. Download the free Kindle for PC app (or the iphone app for that device) and register it to the same Amazon account as your Kindle (or as you would if you got a Kindle), then read Amazon Kindle books on your laptop with the app being a device.

And if you do get a Kindle, you can read all your books, from many Amazon and nonAmazon sources, on all your devices (the Kindle + K4Pc + iPhone + your Mom's Kindle, etc.) as long as they link to the same Amazon general account!

Posted on Feb 17, 2010 6:37:26 PM PST was nice to see Tenix's name again even if it is in a thread that is 18 months old.

George, the last post in this thread is more than 2 years old, and your response is wrong anyway. As long as you have Kindle for PC (or Mac) installed and registered to the account, you don't have to buy the book from your laptop to read it. You download books to it the same way you do to any registered device.

Just curious, how did you find such an old thread?

This is a twofer: posting a very incorrect answer to a very dead thread!
