Anyone have an idea why my Kindle3 just rebooted for no reason at all. Thought I would post the question here before calling Kindle Support. I was listening to an audio version of today's New Your Times, when suddenly on it's own, the narration paused for a few seconds, then the Kindle rebooted. After the start up, I opened the New York Times again, skipped to Section 4 of 20 where I left off, and the audio continued with no problem. Has this happened to anyone else, and if you know, what was the problem? Douglas

I wouldn't bother to call CS over an occasional reset. It's a little computer and sometimes it gets confused or overloaded.

Check your software version, kindle will reboot after an upgrade.

Hello krystalspin, My concern is that I have had the kindle for a few days. I don't think it's a normal function to restart for no reason. I ask for help from those that are familiar with this situation because if it's something that people have experienced getting worse as time goes on. I want to correct it now rather than later, after I have a large number of materials loaded in the Kindle.

And what version is it? The repeated rebooting that [some of] the initial shipment had was corrected by update 3.0.2, per messages on this board.

Occasional rebooting may not be normal but that doesn't mean it is uncommon. I wasn't pooh-poohing your experience, just trying to save you the time and headache for what is probably not a problem, until you know it's a problem.

If you call Kindle CS, they will probably volunteer to send you a new Kindle overnight, without even listening to your full story (again according to people's experience on this forum). If that is what you want, 1-866-321-8851.

Hello krystalspin, pooh-poohing my experience. That's a good one, haven't heard it before. I hope you don't mind if I steal that expression from you. I wasn't thinking that at all. I apologize if I gave you that impression. When I posted the question I was hoping for an answer from someone that has the same problem, and has the answer/solution. I'm still looking for reply's from others that had/has this problem to see if this could become a problem for me later. If this has happened to no one else, then it's my Kindle, and if it happens again, I will call for an exchange.

Mine rebooted over the weekend, I went and got the new update. The last time it rebooted, I got that update.... Seems to be good now.

Hello M, Are you referring to the 3.0.3 update? I have not downloaded, and installed it as yet. My information is that it's a partial update, and people would be better off waiting for it's completion. But if it fixed the problem? I hope to get other input before doing anything. Thanks for your time and information.

My Kindle is just 2 weeks old and after the first 4-5 days of receiving it my Kindle started rebooting. I put in the newest update and it's been fine ever since.

My kindle kept rebooting and freezing, I had the latest upgrade and customer service had me do a factory reset. It still continued to do the same thing. I got a replacement on Friday and now it has been doing the same thing again! I plan on downloading the latest update to see if that helps before I start calling again.

Robyn, Thanks for this information. It's really a help for all of us that have this problem. You reminded me that my system actually did freeze between 1 and 2 minutes before rebooting (thanks for that). I would be interested in knowing if the upgrade worked for you, however that may take some time before you know anything. A few more posted update fixes to this, and I'm off to upgrade to 3.0.3. Thanks again Robyn

Could the rebooting/freezing issue be environmental? I ask because it seems that the people who have had the problem, continue to have the problem with replacement K3's. My K3 has never spontaneously rebooted (knock on wood), at least not that I'm aware of. It did lock up once but I think it was a power, or lack there of, issue. I charged it overnight and it was fine.

Douglas,
Yes I am! It helped I think because it has not rebooted! I have not had any problems with the beta updates. Like I said each time it did the surprise reboot I immediately got the update, then no more issues! I hope this helps you

Foundquilting,
Love your handle!!! Mine did the reboot twice, each time on the weekend, cozy in the a/c, non-smoking house...... Two cats and a dog. However, I do keep my kindle next to the IPad, Maybe Steve Jobs is behind it??? Okay, I am just joking! My Wendell was in a good environment when the reboot happened. Had not been taken outside or anything....

Hi M,
It does help, and I thank you for it. I now have the update saved on my computer. I hope for just a few more positive responses, and BINGO, installed she'll go. All my best. Douglas

Douglas,
I would go ahead and just update.... Your call though. Each time (only twice) it rebooted and I did the update and have not had an issue. I did my update on saturday, and have put about 6 hours of reading in with no issues. ;)

Thanks M. I'm going to give it just one more day. I'm leaving it on continuously (keep waking it when it wants to sleeps) in hopes that it, "what". Does it again, does not do it again, I don't know. I guess just to see what happens....

Cool! I respect your thinking. I am just glad I did not get a problem kindle..... I have not even had to do a hard restart.... I always put mine in sleep mode, wi-fi off unless I get books and have not had problems. Have a good night!

Have a good evening yourself M. Thanks for all your input. Calling you M. makes me think I'm dealing in a James Bond story. Was fun. I'm in Olympia, Washington USA. Time 4:35PM. Look for you again some time. Douglas

I've had the same issue with my kindle that is only a few weeks old. Spoke to CS who advised me that this is a known issue when using the leather Amazon Kindle case(!!).

They suggested I take the kindle out of the case and see if it fixes the problem. So far so good, but it has only been a couple of hours. The CS guy promised to call me back tomorrow to see if it fixed the problem. If it did, he will replace my leather case.

krystalspin says:
Yes, lazyboy, the culprit of the NON-lighted hinged case has come to light (ha ha) in the two months since this thread was written to. In fact, shortly after then.

Amazon is replacing the unlighted with the lighted, which works fine for the vast majority. A few still seem to short out, but it seems to be just a very few, as might slip through any product's quality control. Or you can take the $60 credit and buy a non-hinged cover, such as M-edge's Latitude (a well-liked cover on the K3).

to add to the discussion above: I got a 3rd generation Kindle for Christmas, had no reboot problems until I put it into the non-lighted leather case. I have the latest version and the reboot still happens. customer service (dang hard to find the phone number for a live person!!) confirmed they had been hearing this problem with some frequency. in my case he refunded the cost of the leather case and added an additional $25 to my account to do with as I wish, presumably to compensate for purchase of the lighted case, which apparently doesn't have the problem hardly at all.

In reply to an earlier post on Jan 14, 2011 1:18:58 PM PST
I received a refund and a $25 credit to upgrade to the lighted cover. I got it this week and love it. No more problems with freezing or rebooting.
