Reboot - Why ????

Check your software version, kindle will reboot after an upgrade.

Occasional rebooting may not be normal but that doesn't mean it is uncommon. I wasn't pooh-poohing your experience, just trying to save you the time and headache for what is probably not a problem, until you know it's a problem.

If you call Kindle CS, they will probably volunteer to send you a new Kindle overnight, without even listening to your full story (again according to people's experience on this forum). If that is what you want, 1-866-321-8851.

If this has happened to no one else, then it's my Kindle, and if it happens again, I will call for an exchange.

I got a replacement on Friday and now it has been doing the same thing again! I plan on downloading the latest update to see if that helps before I start calling again.

You reminded me that my system actually did freeze between 1 and 2 minutes before rebooting (thanks for that). I would be interested in knowing if the upgrade worked for you, however that may take some time before you know anything. A few more posted update fixes to this, and I'm off to upgrade to 3.0.3. Could the rebooting/freezing issue be environmental? I ask because it seems that the people who have had the problem, continue to have the problem with replacement K3's. My K3 has never spontaneously rebooted (knock on wood), at least not that I'm aware of. It did lock up once but I think it was a power, or lack there of, issue. I charged it overnight and it was fine.

Yes I am! It helped I think because it has not rebooted! I have not had any problems with the beta updates. Like I said each time it did the surprise reboot I immediately got the update, then no more issues! I hope this helps you

However, I do keep my kindle next to the IPad, Maybe Steve Jobs is behind it??? Okay, I am just joking! My Wendell was in a good environment when the reboot happened. Had not been taken outside or anything....

I would go ahead and just update.... Your call though. Each time (only twice) it rebooted and I did the update and have not had an issue. I did my update on saturday, and have put about 6 hours of reading in with no issues. ;)

They suggested I take the kindle out of the case and see if it fixes the problem. So far so good, but it has only been a couple of hours. The CS guy promised to call me back tomorrow to see if it fixed the problem. If it did, he will replace my leather case.

Amazon is replacing the unlighted with the lighted, which works fine for the vast majority. A few still seem to short out, but it seems to be just a very few, as might slip through any product's quality control. Or you can take the $60 credit and buy a non-hinged cover, such as M-edge's Latitude (a well-liked cover on the K3).

to add to the discussion above: I got a 3rd generation Kindle for Christmas, had no reboot problems until I put it into the non-lighted leather case. I have the latest version and the reboot still happens. customer service (dang hard to find the phone number for a live person!!) confirmed they had been hearing this problem with some frequency. in my case he refunded the cost of the leather case and added an additional $25 to my account to do with as I wish, presumably to compensate for purchase of the lighted case, which apparently doesn't have the problem hardly at all.

I received a refund and a $25 credit to upgrade to the lighted cover. I got it this week and love it. No more problems with freezing or rebooting.
