I was under the impression that we could access 3G no matter where we are. Well, that is wrong. I can access 3G at the ocean but I can't access it in the mountains. Anyone know why??

Mountains blocking the cell phone tower? Did your phone work there?

Brenda says:
No, absolutely no phone service. But why would that interfere with the 3G?

D. Scott says:
3G is based off of the same technology that powers mobile phones. It is just the "third generation" standard for telecommunications.

Thank you for your answer. I didn't understand what 3G was but for some reason just thought it worked anywhere. I love my Kindle2 and have lately been using the 3G a lot while out of town. Now I'm reading about the wifi and 3G and wondering if it's really necessary to have wifi when 3G works pretty good.

BTW, we went four-wheeling and went all the way up to the cell phone tower on a pretty rugged Jeep road and still couldn't get phone service or 3G. I was within 500 feet of the tower and couldn't get service. So we assume it's because it's pointed at another mountain. It was the weirdest feeling to be so close but yet so far!!

I was an early receiver of the Kindle 3. Problems from the start. When I plugged it in to charge the light was green. CS said this sometime happens with a new battery. After 4 hours charging only one bar and after 3 more hours only 2bars. I could not do anything on it as the message you are not near a WiFi connection kept coming up. This was the model with 3G.My Kindle worked at home and work this one worked neither place. Spent a lot of phone time with CS 3 different techs. No go. Finally sent it back and now on the waiting list for a new one. I loved the Kindle 2 and had sold it so I could get the Kindle 3. CS was great and courteous and helpful but I am suffering from lack of Kindle. Ed K

Cellphone towers are owned by the cellphone networks. Kindle uses AT&T's network, if the tower is one servicing (for example) T-Mobile it won't service your Kindle.

Also, being right next to a tower doesn't guarantee a good signal.
The coverage area is not necessarilly a ball around the tower. Depending on the antenna design it may be closer to a donut with a hole where the tower is located.
Most cellphone towers are not unidirectional, so it being aimed at another direction is probably not the reason for your lack of reception (I can imagine a tower in a mountain valley being designed to have stronger signal along the valley floor though, but that would be a special case).

Brenda, 3G (which, BTW, is just means "third generation cellular technology) has to work over *something*, right? It is a bit too much to expect for Amazon to launch its own Iridium-like ( global connectivity system...

Why did I not have a problem with my Kindle 2? Also this would not explain why my Kindle 3 would not get a full charge. Ed K

Dragi Raos says:
As J.T.W. said. 3G on US-only Kindles will work where Sprint cellphones do, and on international ones (that is, newer than approximately a year) where AT&T sets work.

A. Sisk says: are talking apples and oranges. Your kindle not charging correctly has nothing to do with 3G/WiFi.

Cix says:
Attach your kindle to a kite, and try to fly the kite in the direct path of the cell tower antenna. Note: do not do this in a thunderstorm.

Eric Lopaty says:
WiFi is faster than 3G and cheaper for Amazon. That's why you can email documents to your Kindle and it will be delivered when you're connected via WiFi for free instead of the per document charge. I think it also uses less power on your Kindle
