I have a similar issue with my KF HD 7. Some apps work just fine, while others won't let me on at all. And sometimes apps that don't work will start working and those that did work stop working. Right now, Words with Friends works but Fitbit does not. Also can't download Hotmail email. But if I take my KF to work, it works just fine there.
I had all kinds of problems connecting to internet at home. Kindle worked every where else. I ended up calling my ISP and they installed a brand new cable modem and everything worked fine. Why the kindle was so picky is beyond me. I had Wii, PS3, laptop, Nintendo DS, IPods, and Androids all use the WIFI fine through the old cable modem.
Serious;y. though call the Amazon Kindle Technical Support they were able to partially solve my problem, but don't let them fob you off with the "it's your router" that's at fault.
I have first generation kindle fire. I can connect to my wireless router but not to the internet. When I travel it connects just fine but when I come home, nothing. My lap top works just fine so the router is working. Seems like I am not the only one with this problem. I have rebooted everything and it still will not connect. I am ready to throw it against the wall. Anybody have other suggestions
I have amazon kindle and it says I can am connected to 3G or Wi-Fi when I am at home but I go to shop the kindle store and it say I need to connect to the internet. I have tried shutting it off and turning it back on, I have tried restarting it and it still says I am not connected to the internet and I am. What do I do now?
I charged my kindle fire (twice... on different outlets) and the button is green. But it goes out almost immediately after I press it so that I can't get my Kindle to come on. Any suggestions?
I just purchased a Kindle Fire HD 8.9 over the weekend. Much to my dismay, it would connect to my wireless router, but not to the internet (wireless icon in upper right showed an X). I use old Linksys WRT54G (still sold today). In a way, I wasn't surprised, as my Galaxy S3 phone would not connect either. Hoping for the best, I tried a local restaurant that has free wireless; G S3, yes; Kindle Fire, No. I tried my sister's 2wire router modem provided by AT&T Uverse; S3 and Kindle HD both connected. Since my router is probably 10+ years old, I decided to investigate upgrading the firmware. To my surprise, Linksys, now owned by Cisco, still supports the version of my router and released an update in 2012. I was able to download the firmware upgrade and apply it (somewhat technical, but all instructions are on the mfr site). Now both the Kindle HD and my Galaxy S3 connect without problems. I have even re-enabled WEP security, don't broadcast the router SSID, and perform MAC address filtering (only allows devices I have specified to connect) and the connectivity remains. I will update this post if I encounter other problems. It is also worth noting that I downloaded the latest software update for the Kindle prior to updating the router hoping that would fix the issue; obviously it did not. Moral of the story: If you are using an old router, it might not be the Kindle that is the root cause. Perhaps I will eat these words in a week or two....

I keep trying to connect to the wifi, but the fire cant obtain the ip address. It was working fine earlier and I have not had any problems with the wifi before. Also, after the connection fails and i try again i have to re-enter the wifi password each time.

This exactly what happens to my 8.9Kindle. It's sad that I now only use as an ereader cause I have given up on it connecting to the internet. I've been waiting patiently for months for a fix via a software update. What gets me is that if you call the tech support for Kindle, they act like they've never heard of this. Then they make you do all these troubleshooting steps that do not solve the issue.
Did you try to turn on and off your main wireless from home. I had that problem too and my husband said to reset our wireless. It worked after that. I hope this help.
When I do it (connect to the Internet) it automatically turned off acassionally it will stay on for five minutes and the it turns off. I cannot get on the Internet cause whenever I dio it it turned off
Just got of the phone with Kindle tech support and the ladies name was Staci S. that helped me but she was no help at all! She acted as if it was an issue with my router and said she was not aware of 8.9HD KF owners having trouble connecting to the internet via wi-fi.
For the record, my connection is intermittent. For every 5minutes i'm online it kicks me off for 10mins. I have had this device for 4 months now and have waited for a software upgrade to fix this issue but my patience is running out.
Also, I have Freedom Pop which gives me wi-fi connection and I can tether with my iphone/android cell phones. So I have several options for my 8.9KF to connect to the internet.
Further, I have several tablets and other e-devices that have zero issues connecting online wireless.
After several months of this i'm almost ready to throw in the towel. I've ended up just using this as an e-reader.
Edit: Here's the email I just got from Amazon (its automated i'm sure)
Hello,
This is Staci with Amazon.com. We just spoke on the phone.
I'm glad we could resolve your issue today. Here is a brief summary of our conversation for your records.
I'm sorry you've had trouble connecting your Kindle to a Wi-Fi network.
Some public Wi-Fi networks are secured, and may require registration, payment, passcodes, or accepting terms and conditions through a browser before you can connect any device.
If you've received a Wi-Fi password error or are having trouble entering your Kindle's Wi-Fi password, remember:
* Passwords are case sensitive. * Confirm that you are entering numbers on your Kindle device correctly. * Non-English letters or letters with accents, umlauts, etc. are not supported on some Kindle devices.
If after three tries you still can't enter your password, contact your Internet Service Provider, network administrator, or the person who helped you set up your network and make note of the following so that we can help you further:
* The name of the wireless network you're trying to connect to (SSID) * Your router's make / model / firmware version * The security encryption for your Wi-Fi network (WPA / WEP) * The character length of your WPA / WEP key and whether it has uppercase letters or special characters (e.g. + - &?) * Whether Mac Filtering is enabled on your router * The current speed of your wireless connection (can be found by contacting your service provider) * The maximum number of connections allowed by your router * Your router's access point channel (can be found using your router's configuration or settings page) * Your router's wireless mode (B/G/N or N in B/G compatible mode)
If you need more help, you can reach us by chat or phone directly and toll free from many countries. Learn how on our Kindle Support website at:
On the popup for the router are 3 choices - cancel, forget, and connect. Select forget and you will get the password screen. You may have to tap the router a second time to get the password screen to pop up. Using the word forget certainly does not suggest go here for password entry, this is crazy, but it is what it is.

Thanks for this info, although I would say I am a smart self reliant user compared to many, I have no idea how to do what you are talking about in (1) and (2). I'll keep looking around this post for more info. Which puts me in mind of something - I long for the day when hardware and software is made for users who aren't interested in being techies or programmers (which is most of us). It sure ain't now, probably never. Anyway, again, thanks.
I have had my KF since November and hadn't had a problem getting onto the internet via my unsecured home wireless router. A couple of weeks ago we secured our wireless router. Since then my KF may or may not connect to it. Sometimes I will click on an app, leave for a few minutes, come back and see if it ever connected. I have tried moving it closer to the wifi, but that doesn't seem to make a difference. It's a 50/50 chance of getting on, but it does seem to connect more often if I have turned the KF off and back on. Any suggestions?

Every device should have its own, unique, MAC address (Media Access Control). If they did not, chaos would ensue.
There are two situations in which your router may need to know the MAC address of one or more of your other devices.
* If your router is configured to allow only specific devices to connect, then the MAC address for each device needs to be entered into a table in the router. That's generally not a very good way to control access (weak security) but some are set up that way.
* If your computer previously was directly connected to a cable modem (a very, very, very bad idea), you may need to configure your router to "masquerade" as your computer on its WAN interface. Many cable Internet providers use MAC address control to keep neighbors from tapping into the line.
need to jump in here don't know if I'm on the right thread or not but on my wifi router and my kindle fire HD the mac address numbers don't match should they oh and on my kindle fire the mac numbers are different yet again
Someone posted the suggestion of going into settings, and turning the bluetooth on and then off to fix the "x" issue, and it works!! I have done it a few times now, and it has worked to get connectivity every time.
