There are any number of ways to break down such a list, but I thought I'd share the way I'm declaring mine this year.

1) The best book I read this year that was published in 2012: Shine Shine Shine
2-7: Favorite books that I read for the first time
The Casual Vacancy
The Art of Fielding
Defending Jacob
Gone Girl
People of the Book
Baking Cakes in Kigali
and finally, 8-10: Favorite re-reads (this was the hardest)
The Lord of the Rings: One Volume
Prodigal Summer
Mila 18

So let's hear your Top 10 of 2012, however you choose to define it!

Shadow of Night
Gunmetal Magic: A Novel in the World of Kate Daniels
Ripple - A Dolphin Love Story
Unicorn on Speed Dial
Taste: The Story of Britain through Its Cooking
...and I'll be back to update as I think of more.

Seeing the other posts has reminded me of some I read...

I can't remember if I read this in '11 or '12. Loved the books; only wish the movie would've been better...
The Hunger Games Trilogy

I saw the movie to this a couple of times and there is no way I want to read the book.
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (The Millennium Trilogy, Book 1)

Read half of this and not sure if I am going to finish it:
Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children)

Will read this in '13:
Genie: A Scientific Tragedy

So I'm thinking that I should try the Chief Inspector Gamache series?

I haven't read the most recent Anna Quindlen, but I have *loved* many of her other books.

The Louise Penny books are pretty darned stellar! I got the first at a discount rate, then ended up buying most of the rest of the series. I hope you give them a try, because they are so wonderful.

I liked the book better than the movie, too... no surprises there, though; that is often the case for me for most books made into movies :)
