Is this what refresh means?

Hi, and thanks for any input here. I just got a Paperwhite today and when I touch to turn the page it goes from black writing on white to reverse for about 1/2 second then back to black on white.

Is this what everyone was calling refresh? I hate it so far, don't understand why it does that when the Fire doesn't. And if it's normal, it seems harder on the eyes than backlighting every will.

Please let me know because I think it's going back to Amazon tomorrow if this isn't a glitch.

Yes that is refreshing, it has to clear out the EInk and blank out the page then draw the next page. Eink is totally different from the Fire which is a LCD screen. You will get use to it. Think of it like a advanced etch-o-sketch.

The Fire is a LCD screen just like your computer screen, it does not need to blank the screen as it it different technology.

Thank you so much, I think I might get used to it - it's already better, it was just so weird. But the Fire has really been hurting my eyes, so I'll at least try this for awhile - plus it's kind of neat to be able to tap and hold with one hand. I always use the fire on an easel case. Appreciate the quick response!

Some kindles (and I'm not sure whether they all do or not) have a settings option to vary how frequently it does a full refresh on page turn. For the Paperwhite, click Menu/Settings/Reading Options and adjust the Page Refresh setting.

From the manual, p.16

I just make it a habit to blink my eyes as I am changing the page. Then you don't even see it.

Jazzy Jeff, I was doing that because it was hurting my eyes! closed my eyes and counted to two - boy will that mess up your reading experience!

and thank you CBP I did put it to refresh every page just to try it. However, my friend I got one for says that hers does not do at all
what mine was doing....that she doesn't even see a flash, it just turns the page. She thinks mine was defective or it was because I had the 3G on? It was like looking at a printed page, then a
reverse negative of the page, then another page - and this morning it was kind of having trouble even stabilizing the page.....nice that Amazon does free returns!

Did you try a reboot or have Kindle customer service troubleshoot to see if there actually is something wrong with yours?

No, I just returned it today. I didn't like the size, the fact that the page only held about 4 paragraphs compared to the Fire's six, etc. Just in general feel much more comfortable with the Fire - maybe it's what you learned first, because my friend swears she does not even want a Fire! Thanks to everyone!

How many paragraphs the page displays will be determined by the font size you set it on. The smallest font you will get more than 4 paragraphs per page. I know I get more on my Paperwhite. Everyones will be different depending on the settings.
