Kindle Fire HD Screen Issues?

I just received the Kindle Fire HD yesterday. First of all, I'm really impressed with it. The screen resolution is much better than my iPad 1 or 2. I did notice a couple of things about the screen that I wanted to pass along.

Color Cast: Not sure if this is an "issue". It may be more of a characteristic of the Kindle Fire. However, I noticed the color cast of the Kindle is very "warm" when compared to my iPad 1 (very cool) or iPad 2 (a bit warmer cast than the iPad 1). I posted a video on the Amazon review that shows this. Here is the link:

The other thing I noticed is: My Kindle Fire HD has a lot of "light leakage" around the bezel that affects the screen image quality (IMO). It's really noticeable on a dark scene in a movie or when starting the kindle up (ie when much of the screen is black). The iPad 1 was plagued with this issue. My iPad 1 has a lot if light leakage. My iPad 2 has almost none.

I would not hesitate to take or send it back!! There should be no light leakage. I went through 4 iPads before I got one that didn't have that problem. On another note I ended up taking my Fire HD back because the launcher kept freezing up and it was really slow.

Brand new Kindle Fire HD. Turned on, beautiful picture, registered-bam colored stripes on screen-no picture. Turned off, charged, waited a few days-still has stripes and no picture.

Can't really comment on the "color cast." Other than major variations my old eyes don't catch many of the nuances in colors. And even when I do, I often have no major preferences between one or the other. I would say, though, that my KFHD and my iPad 2 appear to be quite similar.

As far as light leakage is concerned, my KFHD has no discernible leakage, at all. Have to admit that I haven't descended into a cavern with a light meter to test it, but in normal use, even in a low light environment, I see no leakage.

I'd agree that you should request a replacement KFHD if your experience differs from this.

I purchased a Kindle Fire HD 7" three days ago.
When I play any video, half of the display is darker than the other half.
No problem with the display when reading a book, magazine, or looking a web page.
I am satisfied except for this issue.
I took it back for an exchange today.
The display on the replacement looks normal while playing a video.

Amazon says:
Hello Doug, I have the exact same problem: a slight yelloish (warm) color cast (very noticeable when compared to the original Kindle Fire) and some light leak at 2 opposite corners only. I also noticed that when trying to slightly bend the tablet the light leakage can be influenced. This is disappointing because with the old Fire there is nothing you can do externally to affect image quality.
What did you end up doing? Return it?

- Mat

Stormi, I am on my second Kindle Fire HD in 2 weeks! Both have had issues of the screen going blank while I am reading it. It has gorgeous color and the resolution is crystal clear, but if they can't get me one that doesn't turn off, (several times in a couple of minutes), I may have to give up on it.

stop bending it!

I do not see any light leakage around the perimeter of my Fire HD.

The HD colors may be slightly warmer than my original Fire, but it is a very, very subtle difference. The comparison is hard to make because the HD display is so much crisper and richer.

@ dawnsong and Barbara:
Thank you for your comments.
You are definitely right, despite the defects my Kindle has, it's hard not to fall in love with the new crisp display. In fact by now I sort of got use of the warm colors, so when I look the original it looks so cool :-)
I then decided to call up the Amazon CS and with no question asked they offered me a replacement.

Thank you Amazon !

Has anyone noticed reflection so bad you can't see screen outdoors?

The Blade says:
It is an LCD screen. Of course you can't see it very well (if at all) outside. That is characteristic of the type of screen used. Just like if you took your TV or computer monitor outside. Same thing.

In reply to an earlier post on Dec 6, 2012 7:09:30 PM PST
Perhaps, but the glossy reflective screen is harder to see see when bright lights are behind you. The matte finish found on many TVs and and monitors won't reflect the glare as bad. I think the glossy screen is nicer under ideal conditions.

FIRST Check Your Settings! Take your finger put at top bring down Settings! Where you see BRIGHTNESS tap on that! Take it OFF Automatic! That gives YOU control on How Bright or Dim you want it to be! I Have No Trouble Reading or Watching a Movies Indoors Or Outside For Reading I have mine set on the Tan color background with the Blackest Settings for the Words.

BTW as for it Timing out while you Read Go into More & Change your Time out/sleep setting. When I read I have mine set at 5 mins [one min was to quick LOL] For Movies I set for Never!

I'm having an issue with the touch screen on my Kindle fire hd 7".

On battery power it is as if the screen is being randomly touched, firing up all different things, email video, etc. But when connected to the changer it work like normal, like when I first got it.

Anyone else experiencing this issue?

I've have the kindle for about 8 m onths and tried the following;
> Reboot
> Fully discharging and charging the device
> Factory defaults

I cannot get it to turn on. it flashes KINDLE FIRE on the screen.....will not turn on. I have unplugged, held start button for 20 seconds. My Dad is a television repairman...he has this ultimate set of tools...I'm thinking of taking it apart?
