I am confused about the page refresh setting. For my pages to turn quickly, do I want it set Tom"off" or "on"?

Shady says:
It says, "Refresh the E Ink display with every page turn" and gives you the choice of having that either on or off. A page turn that refreshes takes longer, so having this option set to 'off' would allow for faster page turns as it will then only refresh every sixth page turn as opposed to every page turn, as I understand it.

R. D. Clark says:
This refers to the black "flash" that occurs when the e-ink screen refreshes itself. Seeing it to "every page" gives you a flash between every page. Setting it to "off" refreshes the screen every sixth page, reducing the time between page turns, but allowing random e-ink particles to accumulate over the course of those six pages, resulting in growing faintness and fuzziness. This bothers some people more than others.

Me, I've been using Kindles since before this option existed so I learned to "tune out" the black flashes, and therefore choose the option that yields the more consistently sharp text rendering. These newer Kindles are faster, with shorter flashes, anyway.

And what about battery consumption? Would it decrease battery life having the option on?

Not enough to matter to most people. Maybe you'd have to charge every 14th day instead of every 15th day.
