I am interested in buying the Kindle Fire HD (probably 7). I want it for entertainment (books, movies, games, etc). But I'm also a college student and am curious if it would be something I could take to class to take notes on, do homework/write papers while at work or away from an actual computer.

I think if you need to take notes and/or write papers, you'll be much happier with a full tablet computer. Research the reviews. To my surprise, I found that the Asus Transformer 700 rates higher than the Google 10.1, and for good reasons - better screen, etc. For serious writing, get an external keyboard for your tablet. You'll probably be able to use the external keyboard in class, but if you find that uncomfortable, the virtual (touch screen) keyboard on the full size tablet will be much easier to use than the smaller one on a KF, even the KF HF 8.9

I understand that it may not be for serious not taking, but what about just quick reminders or short notes during a speech? Just a few short words or a sentense. Nanna

Check the Fire app store for note taking apps.

If possible go to a brick & mortar store and see if you like the keyboard. The first gen fire touch screen isn't up to the task. Hopefully, the newer Fires are better.

I had a chance to use a Nexus 7. Very nice. It would do what you want with ease.
