P. Ziegler says:
Not that it is useful but there IS a camera app on the Kindle Fire HD. It takes pictures, videos and panorama pictures. If you have ES File Explorer the camera app is under System Apps and you can open it from there. Not sure why they hid it from view but it does work.

Thanks for the info Ziegler! Camera is not great, but it is nice to know how to access it. It made me look all grainy and blurry, just like my very first digital camera. *nostalgic sigh*

Why would you want to take pics with a forward facing camera?

i downloaded the program and went to system/app. when i clicked on camera.apk it took me to a place that said i need to click a button to install 3rd party apps, so i did. then it took me to a place to install the camera app, and i clicked install. it started to install and stopped part way through and said it failed to install. didnt see any option to just open the camera. any help/walkthrough would be a huge help! thanks.

I was having the same problem.

However, I was able to find another app in the AppStore called 'Photo Editor' that allows you to use the camera to take pictures. It also has tons of cool photo editing options. But haven't found any good app for video yet. If anyone finds one, let me know.

do you know how to unhide the app? I found it and even was able to create a shortcut but unfortunately I can't find it. do you always have to go through es to find it?

In reply to an earlier post on Sep 22, 2012 8:12:37 AM PDT
The Engineer says:
The reason you can't find "the shortcut" is because ES File Explorer assumes that you are using a "real Android" device and tries to create the shortcut on the non-existent Kindle desktop :(

I keep seeing people saying to read other posts to solve the camera woes, but try as I might...there aren't any effective solutions being posted. Guess we have to wait for the software to be written/upgraded? Hey, my Skype video chatting still doesn't work (despite multiple conversations with kindlespecialists and many "we'll call you backs.")

The Engineer says:
Because Skype is one of the "built-in" apps that came with the Kindle Fire HD, Amazon Kindle Support should have the burden of helping you get it working. Call (866) 216-1072 and press "1." At least, it would mean that if they can't get the camera to work with Skype, there might be something wrong with your Kindle.

Engineer, I am sure as soon as a solution is found it will be posted but if one needs to contact customer service this is the best way...

TO CONTACT KINDLE CUSTOMER SERVICE:
Click on the orange "CONTACT US" button to the right of this page you are on now.
You may have to sign in. I recommend you use the PHONE or CHAT options.
Do not use e-Mail.
CALL ME under the PHONE tab is great if available.
They will call you within minutes.

The Engineer says:
Pete, I can understand that if a person lives outside the US, poking at web buttons may be the best way to contact Amazon Kindle Support. But for some people, especially if they are already flustered by computer problems (with their Kindles), it is much faster to punch up the toll free number, instead of using "another computer."

This is a great option if available to your area...

"CALL ME" under the PHONE tab is great if available.
They will call you within minutes

99.9% of the time you will receive a call back in under 1 or 2 minutes maximum. No charge to you! The bonus being they have looked up and have Your Account at hand when you answer their call.

The Engineer says:
Again, that is good, only if you are able to use "another computer" to contact support. Sometimes, the simple ways are just as good :)

Skype does not come with the Kindle Fire HD. You have to download it from the App Store.

Uh, "Camera," believe it or not.

I got my kindle fire hd last week and skype was preinstalled. Camera doesnt work though.

In reply to an earlier post on Sep 26, 2012 8:34:22 PM PDT
Are you sure Skype was pre installed?
Not on mine!

The Engineer says:
My Kindle Fire HD came with it preinstalled as well; although it had to also be updated from the appstore.

In reply to an earlier post on Sep 26, 2012 9:25:09 PM PDT
@Pete: On mine, it was in Cloud in the Apps tab. It downloaded and installed OK, but I have not tried it out yet.

In reply to an earlier post on Sep 26, 2012 9:39:03 PM PDT
Mine was just needing to be downloaded from the Cloud. Thank God as I cannot get apps without side loading. Even free ones cannot be accessed here.

Which leaves a problem getting the File Manager to set up side loading. Scratches head!
