paperwhite screen

When I first got my paperwhite a few weeks back, I was delighted that there were no pink or green colored splotches. Shaded area at the bottom didn't really bother me since it didn't interfere with the text. Now - the more I read about people annoyed with the shadowing, the more I am noticing it. Power of suggestion perhaps, but the paperwhite screen certainly is not what Amazon first described.

I found the shadows at the bottom very easy to ignore. No worse than reading an old book with yellow and tattered pages. What I do find irritating is the tint to the screen at lower screen brightness. I don't know what is normal for the average paperwhite, but the screen on mine doesn't appear so white at levels below 12 to 14. Infact it looks very blue green as it gets near the bottom of the scale.
I have read that some say at level 3 their paperwhite is so bright it hurts their eyes, but at 3 I have to be in an absolutely dark unlit room to read at that level and the screen is so tinted with color the contrast is terrible.

I agree. I'll probably keep the paperwhite because I like not having to attach a booklight or keep a lamp on , but anything below 12 is unreadable for me. I guess my problem is that I don't know if mine is normal or if Amazon over stated the crisp white screen . I'm not thrilled with the paperwhite but I guess it's better than attaching a booklight.

I had five paperwhites from the first round and am on the second one from the second round. All of them have/had blue splotches. I am on the fence as if I should keep #6 and #7 or holdout for the second generation of paperwhite.

I do like the frontlit screen and I do like the amazon cover. The more I read, the more my eyes get used to the splotches so I will probably just live with it.

For me, reading with a booklight on an evenly colored screen is much more preferable to looking at the green splotches! (I had three paperwhites.) I may try again in six months to a year...perhaps they will have perfected the screen by then.

I agree and I'll probably live with mine also. It just doesn't seem right that Amazon hyped this so much when it doesn't meet the expectations.

Isn't it a shame, though, that Amazon released a product - and falsely hyped it - when it was so not ready for prime time.Very disappointed in Amazon.

Not bad enough to return. It's an okay product, just not the super crisp white screen that Amazon describes.

Mine is great. ALL Paperwhites are not bad.

I don't doubt at all that you guys got lemons, but most people who are happy with theirs won't write here in the forums to say so - perhaps a silent majority. I want to point this out for people on the fence whether to buy one or not. And as Dittiefurby said, it can be returned within thirty days if you get one of the duds.

I just got mine yesterday and it definitely has blue/green and pink blotches. I am going to keep the light turned all the way down during the day (when I do that, the screen is comparable to that of my K2). At night, with the light on VERY low, I don't really notice the blotches that much, and it is slightly better than the uneven lighting I used to get from the little booklight on my K2.

I think people may be having different experiences because of different sensitivities to these colors--my husband claims that he can't see them, and to me they are very obvious. That may be why some people are happy with their first one and others are unhappy after getting 6 or 7 of them.

I will say one thing for sure, though, and that is that mine does not look like the one in the advertisements. Is it "OK" and "acceptable" but definitely does not live up to the videos and photos on the website.

I would emphasize that this is a minor annoyance compared to all of the things I love about having a Kindle. I got the K2 when it first came out and it has been wonderful (the broken screen was my fault). The Paperwhite has many improved features and I am sure I will get used to the screen as well.

It has taken me a bit of adjusting. I'm very aware of the mottling on the screen with the light on. Since I bought it because of the light, that is the most important to me. I tried to exchange, but the others were worse. I settled for the 1st one (unlike me to settle) because I love the K5 so much. Screen and loss of speakers aside, it may be my favorite Kindle after the K1.
