I just bought a 2nd gen Kindle Fire, every time I turn it on, it sucks the power on out wi-fi. We have daily download limits and we seem to exceed it every time i turn on my kindle. Can anyone tell me why? I am not watching video's, streaming music, or even really shopping. Just reading a book already downloaded seems to do it????

You don't need to turn on wi-fi in order to read a book that you've already downloaded.

Why are you turning wi-fi on if you're not using it?

With my first gen I could leave it so it connected automatically and not have a problem. I occasionally check email or play a game, but just having it on sucks our allowance done in a matter of minutes!

Then turn it off when you don't need to be connected!

How much is your daily limit?

200mb per day. We do all of our windows and security downloads at night during their free time

My guess would be that it's trying to download an update or something. That's quite a low limit (start doing anything much in the way of web browsing each day and you'd have to increase it), but it ought to be enough for what you describe.

The other possibility is that you're leaving open a page that refreshes automatically. Webmail inboxes and news sites are two common ones. That constant refreshing will chew up your download limit really quickly.

Thanks for the input. I have not even been on the web on this kindle checked my email yet. We have two laptops and browse the web frequently on those and don't seem to have the same problem. I have a status meter on my computer that shows what percentage we have left of our daily limit. You can see it automatically start going down as soon as I turn my kindle on. We also have a first gen kindle fire and don't have a problem with it. Just with the new 2nd gen.

Just turn the wifi off. If it's that a big a deal to turn if off, then you can either continue to use up your daily allotment or you can return the new KF.

Choices are good.

As an interim measure, of course turning the wifi off will suffice. But it's going to really limit your use of it if you're reluctant to turn it on at all (and I would be too, if I had a daily limit like that and one of my devices was chewing up the allowance). I'd recommend you talk to Kindle customer support and see if you can establish what's causing it. If it's temporary (like downloading an update, or doing the first sync), then you just have to bite the bullet and do it at the best possible time. But if it's more longterm there may be a problem with the device, in which case talking to CS will (hopefully) come up with a solution.
