HAPPY ANNIVERSARY JANINE

A peek into my fantasy world on the day the dragons gave up their power

The sun smoldered through a winter-pale sky, like a glowing ember on the eastern horizon. The air was cold and thin, difficult to breathe atop the mountainous peak that topped the cavernous city of Drakehaven-the last city the dragons would ever build.
Mas'Ara clutched the hilt of her sword in both hands, watching as a vortex of fire twisted around the blade, melting the snow beneath her feet. The North wind lifted her raven black hair. Her crimson cloak unfolded behind her like a flag snapping against the empty scabbard that was strapped to the back of her silver scaled armor.
The massive head of dragon hovered just above her head, mouth open with rows of sharp teeth gleaming in the pale light. Light pulsed as well from the dragon's golden scales, matching the fire that danced around Mas'Ara's sword. Three great spikes crowned its head and another row ran down the dragon's back from the base of his neck to the tip of his tail.
Mas'Ara's gaze drifted up into the dragon's sad eyes. She saw her reflection in those soft brown orbs. Night-black hair framed a human face that she hadn't worn for more than a week.
How can I survive in this frail human form? she brooded.
She closed her eyes remembering her previous form. Glorious silver-scaled dragon wings stretched out on each side of her as she drifted on a warm current of air. In her mind, she pulled her wings tight against her body and dove toward a grassy bank, dotted with elk. Seconds before hitting the ground, she opened her wings letting the wind lift her as her talons sank into the soft flesh of a yearling.
A chill settled over her shoulders putting an end to her daydream. She turned and stared at the encroaching darkness behind her. The dark stain churned in the sky like black smoke from a burning forest of sap heavy pine. Darker shadows gave evidence of the black scaled drakyn, drawing ever nearer to her underground home.
Her gaze dropped to the valley below, where ranks of noble dragons prepared for battle. Red fire-dragons made up the front lines, flanked on the left by the silver dragons who were masters of the spirits of wind. On the right, the sapphire water-dragons held their positions around an emerald lake of deep water. Golden earth-dragons made up the core, a solid, unmovable force that nevertheless would soon fail against the onslaught of immortal evil that descended from the darkened skies.
Mas'Ara shut eyes her tight trying to damn the flood of tears, surging against her closed lids. She turned back, finding her father's dragon eyes once again, but this time she saw more than sadness. She saw the pride of a father who had more faith in her than she had for herself. She found strength and hope in her father's eyes that she had lost the moment she learned she must sheathe her sword, in his still beating heart.
Her father lifted his wings, exposing the soft scales of his breast. Mas'Ara let her gaze sink into the ground. Tears flooded her eyes, and sizzled as they fell across her fiery blade.
Her father's voice filled her thoughts. Strike me now!
How can I? What if it doesn't work?
The dragon's voice seeped into her mind again. It is the only way to stanch the tide of darkness that threatens our world, daughter.
She swallowed the lump that threatened to close her throat. Her mouth went dry and she bit her cracked lips, letting the cold wind burn them as she lifted the Sword of Souls to her father's breast. She watched the fire play along the length of the blade. Then, closing her eyes, she steeled her resolve and thrust upward with all her strength, plunging the blade into her father's heart.
She expected the white hot fire of a dragon's death flame to engulf her, taking her life with his, but the cold winds still numbed the tips of her ears. She released the sword and let her hands fall to her sides.

She braved a peek through squinted eyes, and was nearly blinded by her father's scales. The brightness continued to seep painfully through closed lids until she laced her fingers over her face. Minutes passed before the bright red outlines of her fingers faded to pink. She lowered her hand, seeing only bright spots of gold. More time passed as the spots faded and shadows took the form of the world around her. The area where her father had been was filled now with a misty golden light that swirled in the blustery wind, as it merged into a familiar shape. Her heartbeat quickened, bringing a small measure of warmth to her cheeks.
The dragon that was her father stood before her again, except now she could see the shadows of the peaks, through his misty form. The Sword of Souls caught her eyes. She thought it had fallen to the earth when she let it go, but it remained buried in her father's heart, a reminder of the deed he had urged her to commit.
Well, done child. Together we will bring an end to Mor'Drak and the terror of his drakyn.
The mists thinned and dissolved into a fiery light that sank like a whirlpool into the swirling dark orb at the pommel of the Sword of Souls. The blade stayed aloft, held by some invisible force that defied even the shrill of the blustery winds.
Her father's voice echoed in her mind. I have become the sword. Take me now and complete the task.
Mas'Ara stared at her human hand. So much had happened. So much had changed. She took a step toward the sword and wrapped her hand around its hilt. It warmed her numbed fingers as she took it and slashed the air that held it. Power infused her hand, joining her spirit with that of the sword. The sword was part of her now, as well. It added no weight to her stroke. She slashed the air again then lifted it to the curtain of darkness surrounding Drakehaven. A drop of cold sweat rolled down her back, as fires burst from the tip of the sword. The stream of fire burned a hole through the darkness, connecting with the bright sun beyond. A wave of light flowed from both sides of the fiery stream, rolling through clouds and darkness as it encircled the world. In the wash of the swords light, there came a new cascade of fires as dragon after dragon burst into flames.
Tears welled in Mas'Ara's eyes but she held the sword aloft. Death flames scorched the land and air, rolling through the valley below. The Sword of Souls, true to its name, ripped out the souls of both friend and foe.
Smoke and ash from more than ten thousand flames fluttered on the winds as the setting sun finally peeked through the lower edge of grey, bathing the mountain where she stood and the valley below in its subtle glow. Mas'Ara's gaze fell to the sword's dark crystal pommel and there she found a swirl of gold eddying deep within the dark orb like molten ore in an obsidian sea. Her heart and arm painfully sore, she finally let the tip of her sword fall to the bare stone.
She knew it was not the end of all dragon-kind. She had shared her new human soul with her dragon brother, saving his life, though the sword took his soul. A scattered few, like her had learned the shape of the human soul. They had transformed themselves and likewise shared their souls, each saving only one dragon from the millions that perished.
Mas'Ara knew this was not the end of the war either. Liquid crystal from the seas on Aquas-the blue moon that circled their world-was rumored to block the sword's power. Mor'Drak and his ilk would have to hide for now in the dark crystal, but not forever. Not if they could twist the hearts of the humans who would soon rule this world.

Hugs and prayers go out to all those who care for loved ones...as well as those who suffer through painful diseases / injuries...I hope that you find comfort and peace of mind.
Let's remember all those whose homes were taken by Hurricane Sandy. Keep them in your thoughts or prayers. And if you are able to help out do so...

Let us also remember the families who lost loved ones so tragically in the senseless shooting at the Newtown Elementary School...The hearts of a nation are wound by the deaths of children and theirs teachers...I pray we can somehow find a way to end the madness.

Some of my first picks of the day....

Medical Error: Prescription for Trouble Series #2 - Romance

Dr. Anna McIntyre's life was going along just fine until someone else started living it. Her patient died because of an identity mix-up, her medical career is in jeopardy because of forged prescriptions, and her credit is in ruins. She thought things couldn't get worse, but that was before she opened the envelope and saw a positive HIV test with her name on it.

Her allies are two men who are also competing for her affection. Dr. Nick Valentine is a cynic who carries a load of guilt. Attorney Ross Donovan is a recovering alcoholic. The deeper Anna digs to discover who's behind the identity thefts, the higher the stakes. Finally, when her life is on the line, Anna finds that her determination to clear her name might have been a prescription for trouble.

Where The Sun Don't Shine - Mystery

A missing girl.
A lost father.
Murder. Mayhem. Tattoos.
Just another day in Venice Beach.

Where The Sun Don't Shine is the story of Marley, a once successful Hollywood player who's tumbled so far down the ladder of success that he's got almost nothing left. Just a one room apartment on Venice Beach and a fragile relationship with his 16 year old daughter.

Marley's at the end of his rope when he gets a phone call from an old producing partner who wants to throw Marley some work. Which sounds great until Marley realizes that the "work" is tracking down a missing actress. An actress who may or may not be dead. Every instinct Marley has tells him to walk away. But the lure of easy money is the single thing that everyone in Hollywood has in common.

Marley finds himself thrust into the back alleys of the film industry. Into a nexus of porn, kidnapping, studio politics and the dream-dead denizens of modern Hollywood. Struggling to do the right thing, and to be a father to his daughter, Marley soon finds that everything is at stake: His future, his daughter, even his life...

Love Then Begins (The Lord & Lady Baugham Stories) - Romance

A romance in a tiny Scottish border village at last gives way to a wedding just as the old year gives over to the new. This short story, the second in the Lord and Lady Baugham series, bridges Twixt Two Equal Armies and its sequel, The West Yet Glimmers, by chronicling a most rewarding honeymoon at Clyne Cottage and how, afterwards, the newly-weds successfully managed to postpone further domestic obligations by turning east instead of west at a crucial crossroads, ending up on the doorstep of Pemberley House in Derbyshire!

Good morning. Christmas is getting so close - how is everybody doing in the gift buying and wrapping department? I'm almost done, just 2-3 more to buy, 3 more coming in the mail, but everything so far is wrapped. However, you've all got me beat with cooking and baking. I've done absolutely nothing. I've got to get at least one jam cake made, two would be better. I really don't have anyone to bake for except for Christmas Eve afternoon, when Christmas starts at my house with appetizers and our Christmas treasure search, then gift opening. On to my nephew's house for dinner then opening at his house. Of course, next morning is Santa's big deal then Christmas dinner at my sisters. I help with that also.

Yipes! There I go again, get me started talking and I don't want to stop. Hope everyone has a wonderful day and aches and ills are much better for all. When sickness, trouble of any sort, or sadness started to rear it's ugly head, my mother used to say to "guard against it". I sometimes wondered how she did that but she managed it somehow. She could work circles around me and then throw a meal on the table in 30 minutes and have the dishes washed in 5 more minutes. Guess I'm missing my mom today.

Good Morning!

Thank you Leo.....great start! Hope you're feeling better.

I wish everyone a happy, healthy day. I need to really get moving........! I am way behind. I am watching minimal news now, because I really can't handle the reality of it. All I do is cry and I need to be preparing for Christmas. I'm not crying as much today, but feel so sad.

Bells-a-Junglin,
I think there was just something about the women of that generation from that area.
My grandmothers (one from Prestonsburg KY, the other Crum WV) could put huge meals on the table along with your choice of fresh desserts and never appear flustered or winded. There was never a dirty dish in the kitchen when they sat down to eat. (I never have reached that level.) There was never a stray dust bunny in the corner or under their beds. It would have been lonely and scared to be there, they were cleaning demons. (I own a dust bunny farm and seem to be raising them.) All while hand piecing quilts or crocheting in their "free time". (what free time??)

This is the time of year I think we miss our loved ones the most. I hope your day goes smoothly. How is your niece in law doing with the loss of her grandmother??

Rain Dance: Three Novels

DARK HORSE
When high school student Derrick Booker, the only black student at a posh Orange County high school, is accused of killing his white girlfriend, ex-college football hero and detective Jim Knighthorse is hired to dig a little deeper into the murder. It doesn't take long for Knighthorse to realize that not all is as it seems at tranquil Huntington High, from a band director who preys on the innocent to a vice-principal with a secret agenda of her own. Not to mention someone's hired a professional killer to keep Knighthorse permanently off the case. As the investigation continues, Knighthorse's personal life is shattered by the discovery of new evidence relating to his mother's unsolved murder, a murder dating back twenty years. Reeling from the discovery, a determined Jim Knighthorse sets out to bring two killers to justice.

THE MUMMY CASE
Private investigator Jim Knighthorse (from DARK HORSE) takes on a very, very cold case. When historian Willie Clarke dies of mysteriously of dehydration in the California deserts, ex-football hero Jim Knighthorse is hired to dig a little deeper - and discovers a shocking connection to one of the West's oldest mysteries. Over a hundred years ago, an unnamed cowboy was murdered in the California desert and, due to freak weather conditions, would become mummified within twenty-four hours. Now known to the world as Sylvester the Mummy and displayed in a creepy curiosity shop, Sylvester and historian Willie Clarke will be forever linked in mystery. That is, unless private investigator Jim Knighthorse can survive long enough to untangle one of the West's greatest unsolved murders.

ELVIS HAS NOT LEFT THE BUILDING
It's tough being the King. Which is why in 1977 Elvis fakes his own death and endures massive facial reconstruction surgery, disappearing from the limelight to live a normal life as the unassuming Aaron King. Unfortunately, leaving fame behind also meant leaving his fortune behind, and now Elvis finds himself broke, living in near poverty in a small apartment in Los Angeles. Luckily for him, it turns out he's a pretty good private investigator. Not to mention, he misses his first love, music, and has thoughts of making a comeback. Discreetly, of course. But one thing at a time. First he has to solve a baffling missing person case, in which a young starlet, at the beginning of a promising career, has disappeared off the face of the earth. As Elvis digs deeper, he finds himself surrounded by the seedier elements of Los Angeles, from nefarious Hollywood producers who prey on the young, to twin brothers with a dark secret. Ultimately, Elvis discovers a truth almost too horrible to imagine. And through it all, Elvis Presley slowly makes his singing comeback - only to be reunited on stage with someone even the King himself never dreamed possible.

Love Evolution

After the death of her twin brother, nineteen year old guitar prodigy Avery Jones finds herself desperate, alone, and out of options. Hope arrives in the form of a job opening with Brutal Strength, one of the biggest rock bands out there. Only problem is temperamental lead singer Marcus Anthony doesn't want a woman in the group. So Avery and her manager Trevor come up with a plan involving a Bieber haircut and men's clothing. No one seems to be onto their little con. But what happens when Avery starts falling for Marcus? Will she be able to continue with the farce or will the whole thing come crashing down around her like a house of cards?

For those who are curious about the cause and cure of the problems with the kinlib feed using the Chrome browser, i tracked down a solution. Chrome needs an RSS extension to be able to read the feed while Firefox already has that ability built in. The extension is easy to install on Chrome and i can now read the kinlib feed.
