I've read that it's possible to pay $15.00 toAmazon to remove the ads that are installed in the Kindle Fire HD. Has anyone done it, or know how to do it?

Kat, you go to Manage Your Kindle/Manage Your Devices, and click the Unsubscribe link by the device.

Please be aware that does not remove the Customers Also Bought banner below the carousel. Amazon is going to give us an update at some point that will allow us to turn that feature off. But it is not what you get rid of when you opt out of the Special Offers.

Special Offers are what you see on the sleep mode picture, and in a line of text at the lower left of the screen.

Kat -
If you would like to opt out of these special offers, you can do so through Manage Your Kindle Page (http://www.amazon.com/myk) for $15 after you have registered your device.

The fact that Amazon charges to remove ads is ridiculous. I bought the Kindle and buy ebooks from Amazon. They're making plenty of money. Shame on Amazon.

Bixillarla says:
You got the Kindle cheaper because of the ads. If you do not want the ads then you have to pay full price for the Kindle. There is nothing wrong with this.

Just like the Eink Kindles there is a $20 difference between Special Offer version and one without.

I wasn't given the option to pay more without ads or I would have gladly paid full price to not have ads pumped in, and that irritating "customers also bought" banner.

You are given the option. If you want you can turn them of once the device is shipped.

You can pay the difference in the special offer versus non-special offer price on the Manage Your Devices page, and special offers will go away. Amazon has said they will be giving an option to Fire owners to turn off the "customers also bought" banner in a future software update. What you can't turn off is ads that are part of non-Amazon apps, because those are tied to the apps, not to the device or to Amazon.

This is so true. But, the Kindle that comes with the ad is cheaper than the regular one - that is the reason to pay for the upgrade. They explained when I purchased mine and got the cheaper model if I decided to stop the ads that I would have to pay the difference.

After discovering that I couldn't change my background on my own belonging and had to see these ads every time I turned it on, I did some research.... You won't ever be given the option if you have the Kindle Fire HD and Kindle Fire 2nd Generation. You have to go through your Amazon account online after you have bought and registered the device to your account, and then unsubscribe as Meya's post describes. Everything is explained if log into your Amazon account online under Your Account>Manage Your Kindle>Manage Your Devices. It a major annoyance, especially if you got this as a gift like I did, and have to pay $15 from your own pocket to get rid of the ads.

Don't be silly, you didn't have to pay $15 from your own pocket - you could have returned the gift to the person who gifted it or to Amazon.

You chose not to, so you have agreed to the terms.

Edited for typo.

Is it a major annoyance that the books you wanted to read and the apps you wanted weren't included on your Kindle Fire either? It's your choice to upgrade the gift you were given with additional purchases. You were gifted the Kindle, but the apps and books you purchased yourself, along with the option to remove the special offers. Or you could have explored the special offers, downloaded some free music, saved on a few best-selling books, or ignored the lock screen.

What?

What you are describing has nothing to do with Amazon. They don't put out ads like that, check any free apps you may have downloaded.
